well, you will need to know your rear end type, which is a 10-bolt, so you know that and your gear ratio, that is the 3.45. if that isn't from your car you will need to get the proper gear ratio. you will also need to know the number of splines for your axleshafts in the rear...should be 28 but might be 31...i really am not sure here, do a search and you can find the info on it...after knowing that information, just find a posi unit that fits all those parameters and suits your needs and install away!!

The '89 model year was the switch from 26 to 28 spline axles. Your car could have either. If you have 28 spline axles than you can use any 3 series carrier and gears from a '90 on up ten bolt. This includes 4th gen parts as well. Assuming no previous owner changed your gears (you should pull the cover and check to and varify) you currently have a 2 series carrier with 2.73 gears. You will have to do some research to determine what ratio you want along with what carrier (posi) you want to run it with. That will depend on what you do with the car, how you drive it, along with the power band of your motor.

You've got to do some exploratory work on your car first. Count the number of bolts that hold the cover on. If it has 9, it's a Borg/Warner 9-bolt. If it's 10, it's a GM Corporate 7.625" 10-bolt.

Pull the cover off the rear. Count the teeth on the ring gear and the teeth on the pinion gear. Divide the ring gear teeth by the pinion teeth. That's your gear ratio. (for example: 41 teeth on the ring gear, 10 teeth on the pinion = 41/10 = 4.10:1 gear ratio).

Remove one of the rear wheels. Remove the brake drum or rotor, depending on if your car has drum or disc brakes in the rear. Go inside the rear end. Remove the small bolt from the carrier. Remove the cross pin. Push the axelshaft inwards on the side without the wheel. Remove the c-clip from the axelshaft inside the rear (it may just fall off when you push the axel in). Pull the axel shaft out of the rear. Count the number of splines. It will be either 26 or 28.

Once you know the type of rear, gear ratio, and number of axel splines you will be able to make an educated purchase. Otherwise it's a crap shoot and you may end up with parts you can't use.

both of those ebay auctions will not work on your car. you don't have an 8.5. we have 7.5 or 7 5/8 in our cars.

You have either 26 or 28 spline axels. Just pull a shaft and count them. There are no external identifiers. You can't even go by year strictly speaking.

8.5" 10-bolts and 12-bolts had 30 spline axels. The 7.5" 10-bolt only goes up to 28. The seats for the side bearings are so small as it is that there's no way you could step up to a shaft larger than 28s.

While you're putting posi on it, good opportunity to put gear, axle, and bearing on it too.

Yukon gears from Randy's Ring & Pinion www.ringpinion.com Best prices on posis and install kits too. All made in the USA quality stuff.

Moser axels. Step up to 28 spline and order the posi accordingly. The axels are about $250 a set.

$50 is pretty cheap, and without knowing the condition of the piece it's tough to say if it's a good buy.

Who will you be having do the installation? If you're thinking of doing it yourself but don't know what's involved, you may want to read up on it first.

I'd get the 28-spline unit and buy axels if necessary. The 26 spline axels are a weak link. All 7.5s went to 28 spline shafts later on (that's all 4th gens ever had). Even if you've got 28 spline shafts now they are probably wasted on the bearing surface. Most are by this time, and if you're going to replace the axels anyway now's the time to step up to 28s and aftermarket shafts which are made from better material.
