So i'm just finishing up the t56 swap, all i have left is the wiring the back up lights and finding switch for the clutch so i have to depress it to start the car (right now the wires are just taped together so i can drive it!). My question is that when i am in gear and i let off the gas, sometimes there is a rattle or shaking noise that sounds like it is coming from the shifter. Other than some loose bolts somewhere, does anybody have any idea what might make a sound like that?

 

What tranny mount are you using? Is it tight?

 

i have the spohn mount, tommorow I am going to go under the car and check every nut and bolt.

The car shifts great, but it seems like the something is loose, its just doesn't feel tight, even though it goes into gear fine everything else feels "sloppy". Its really hard to explain. I might have to record what it sounds like.

 

Double check your shifter handle bolts and also the shifter base to trans bolts while you're under there.

Do you have an aftermarket shifter on there? If so, those have stops which need to be adjusted correctly / can come out of adjustment.

 

this sucks,

everything is tight, so now i have no idea, nothing is hitting, i thought maybe it was the shifter base hiting the tunnel, but thats not happening. Its like a clunking sound kind of. I can make it happen by getting into gear, coasting for a second then tapping the gas, the front end comes up and as it comes back down, it kind of jerks back and forth and as it does thats when it makes the clunk clunk clunk kind of sound.

Also sometimes when i start off rather slowly in first, there is a low rattle i can feel in the shifter.

by the way this is a used t-56 with about 80,000 miles, new ram clutch and pressure plate, resurfaced flywheel.

any ideas would help

 

its your torque arm if you got the adjustable kind,

 

are you sure youre not trying to take off without enough gear and youre bogging down a bit..it happened to me a couple times when driving my friends 95 formula firehawk

i would describe it just as you did.. a low rattle in the shifter, and i think its perfectly normal, does it do it when you have the revs up? try it in like second gear at 3500 or 4000 rpm or so, it shouldnt make that low rattle up there.

 

yeah, the low rattle happens at a lower rpm, i wasn't really that worried about that, I was just throwing it out there in case there was some kind of connection to the other problem I'm having.

Last night I thought I thought that maybe my adjustable panhard bar or lca's might have come loose, so I will check those today, but I don't think that would really make the "clunking" noise.

 

and you're sure it's not the transmission mount? put a block of wood on a floor jack and jack up the tranny..see if theres a split in the mount. also check the motor mounts. my tranny mount was split and was making the same sort of clunking sounds when i got on and off the gas, couldnt tell it was split in half till i put a jack under the tranny

 

also check that the tranny mount tightens down and the nut doesnt spin freely, the nut on my mount was actually stripped and it was the original mount from the factory

 

The T56 makes some nasty grinding/growling sounds in 1st gear starting out. If it does it any time past 1200 rpm or so something is definately up. Otherwise, thats just the bonus T56 audio system at work.

 

the tranny mount is brand new, so i hope its not split, and have the bolts that hold it to the frame tourqed to 55 ft/lbs, but i'm going to crawl under there again today and check the things you guys suggested.

what about your u-joints? mine done that, let off the gas and tap it again and it kinda felt like there was "slack" in the driveline...

 

its not my u joints, just replaced them. I did jack up the tranny and found out that the transmission mount was half torn off, so I went out and got a new one from pepboys, but when i went to put it on, i broke the damn bolt off. I welded it back together, and put it back in, but i think it might still be messed up. anyway the short of it is that I got to drive it around and it seems like some of the noise went away, but there is still some clicking going on, its more like shaking a bag of change or something. It really sounds like it is coming from the shifter. I have the pro 5.0 shifter, has anybody noticed this being noisy? I'm thinking about putting the stock shifter on and seeing if that makes as much noise.

Also, I was thinking about a poly transmission mount, are there any negatives to having one of these?

 

More vibrations; I'm not sure how much more or if it's even noticable. It costs an extra 10 dollars. That's all I can think of.

 

no def get the poly mount, with my 700r4 i ripped two stock mounts the first time i shifted hard into second..you can romp on the urethane mount and it holds up..i got an energy suspension one and it's great..you'll break the rubber one again..

 

i took it out again today and the sound is still there, its like a chunk sound that happens if i don't let the clutch out smoothly or if I am in gear and let off the gas then tap it. the sound seems to correspond with the movement of the transmission. I have the inside stripped still from the swap, so i can see the end of the tranny moving and hear the sound at the same time. I'm starting to think it has something to do with the tourqe arm. But when i crawl under the car, everything is tight, and i cant recreate the sound by shaking the **it out of the tourqe arm. This is starting to **** me off to no end. any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

 

I don't think you every answered porkyzilla, did you get the Spohn torque arm as well? Mine was making the same exact noise until I went back to the stock torque arm. You could coast in any gear and blip the throttle to get a horrible ratcheting clunk.

i have the stock tourqe arm, but do you know why the spohn tourqe arm was making that sound?

 

check your torque arm mount, if you were driving with a broken tranny mount, the torque arm mount takes the stress

 

The tourqe arm mount looks good, all the bolts that hold it to the tranny are tight. I haven't really driven the car that much since the swap becuase of this noise, so I don't think that the mount could be that bad, plus if I crawl under the car, It is not easy to move the tourqe arm by hand. I'm thinking about getting poly bushings for both mounts, but somehow I don't think that will solve my problem.

 

Do a seach on it. Someone has a video out there with the problem shown. I think he narrowed it down to the hole in the bushing being larger than the sleeve on the bolt. The allowed very minute movement resulting in chatter. A lot of people have no issues, so it most likely only occurs in certain setups at certain angles.

Heh.. I guess that should have been 'mgilorma, I don't think you ever answered Porkyzilla's question'... But it's still good to know you had the same issues.

I was prepaired for increased road noise, but not the clunking.. Glad I saved the stock piece and TA mount.

so I finally got my poly bushings installed tonight, and obviously i still have the clunking noise. But when i had the tourqe arm off, i decided to move it around and i was able to recreate the noise. It corresponded to the slip yoke going in and out of the tranny. So what the heck is that about, I'm guessing thats a bad noise. Any ideas?
