9-bolt applications

I was wondering if anyone knows if the Borg-Warner 9-bolt rear came in any vehicles other than our third gen f-bodies. The reason I ask is because they are not many Camaros and Firebirds in the junkyards in south FL with Borg-Warners that aren't mangled beyond usability. If they came in even one other model RWD vehicle, it would double my chances of finding some of the parts I'm looking for.

Thanks for any input.

HAte to be the one to break it too you, but in the USA, they were F body twins only.

I;m not sure if they used the same rear in Holdens down under at any point, but it doesnt help you anyhow.

I had the same rear end in my 88 and unfortuneately there are not any parts available for that rear end. I went with a Strange Engineering 12 bolt that was about $2200.00 and then I had to switch the brakes over to 4th generation style. Not a huge deal but not the simple swap you would hope for.

What type of parts are you looking for? There are sources for most 9-bolt parts listed in other posts on these boards. They're not cheap or easy to find, but most parts are available.

9 bolt

Ya I thought the 9 bolt parts were over priced for what you get, I wanted to do a simple gear upgrade on mine and decided against it. I have decided to spend a little more money and find a 90-91 7.5 10 bolt out of a 3rd gen, (easy enough to do) and just start with that and basically use the housing itself and start from scratch and build my own rear with Eaton pro series posi, Richmond gears, strange axles, etc...I believe all I have to do is run over to GM and get the disc brake brackets for the 7.5 and then I can transfer the discs from the 9 bolt right over to the 7.5, as I believe the brackets are slightly different between the two rears. Then I will have a rear in it that I can go to any parts store and pick up parts for if I ever have to. If I was making enough power I would just spring for a Strange 12 bolt conversion but that is overkill for my car at this point. Larry.

9 bolt

Ya, they are still using a version of it in the Holden cars that are shipped over here for the new GTO's, if you want to call them that only it is an independant rear but the center section is much the same. I just want to stay away from it all together, too much of a pain for parts, no rebuildable posi units, cost is high, just a general pain in the butt. The 7.5 10 bolt is cheap and plentifull, and I can build it to be strong enough for my needs, the Eaton pro series posi is rebuildable so when it wears out it can be fixed for cheap, just some clutches, shims, springs, etc...I can go on and on but doesn't really matter. I guess it is whatever someone wants to do. Larry.

i would love to have a plain 'ol ten bolt. i wouldnt even mind if the gears sucked or it was a standard non-posi carrier, or even drum brakes. i know how to change all that stuff. but there is almost no information on these rears. i heard that there are no c-clips to hold the axles in, but i dont wanna open the thing up and look until i get some info on how to put it back together. in this case, a strong differential is my modification weakness.

and i certainly can't afford to be ripping into brand new cars imported from the other side of the planet. college student funds are very limited

9 bolt

If you have the Aussis 9 bolt then your axles do not have c-clips. They are held in by bolts and a retaining plate out on the end of the axle housing. Then you usually need a slide hammer to pop the axle loose, kinda like a 9 inch ford.
I am also on the market for a standard 7.5 10 bolt myself, I don't care either of the kind of shape it's in because I also have plans to just build one from scratch with all new parts. That way I know what I have and should be trouble free for thousands of miles. It will cost me about $1,000 to put the rear together the way I want, and it should be strong enough for my week kneed 350 tuned port with a slush box. I built another 7.5 rear for my monza a couple years ago, I run a stout 406 in that car with a muncie 4 speed, I pound the crap out of that car, it's my daily driver too, that rear is hanging tuff, I built it also with all new parts, good stuff, strange axles, new gears, pro series eaton posi etc....much the way I want to build one for the camaro, so in that pooch of a car I have no worries about a 7.5 10 bolt. If I ever do a strange 12 bolt I think the monza would get one first since it is the car that would need it the most anyway. Just my feelings on it. Larry.
