Re: 700R4 TV questions thanks
Pulling the TV cable out increases line pressure. This means that the pressure on each clutch will increase, making the shifts shorter and harder. It also means that the governor has to reach higher RPM before the governor pressure matches the TV pressure to cause an upshift.
It will only hold the gear and shift hard with the cable disconnected if you have the TV check ball installed. It's a safety feature put there by GM to make the transmission think that the TV cable is at WOT in case it breaks, to allow you to limp it to the shop and save the clutches. Not every transmission has the check ball, and many rebuilders leave them out. If you don't have it, then your transmission will shift very early and very soft.
The GM approved method to replace the TV cable does so without removing the pan. If you have trouble getting it connected to the linkage inside the transmission though, you can drop the pan so you can see what you're doing.

So this may be a dumb question but will pulling the cable out a little on a tranny with sloppy shifts greatly reduce its life. I put a zip tie on mine for a day and it shifted like it was new again, but in fear of trashing the tranny i took it off.

If you can't get it connected without dropping the pan, just think it's probably time to change the fluid and filter anyway.

the damn link rod is bent 90 degree on the end, just how in the hell is the cable end supposed ot stay on that!? especially with how damned sloppy it is ?!
im &^%$#@ pissed!
what the hell is the deal with this ??
how do you keep the freakin link rod and cable togetherr when you are re-installing the housing back into the tranny case hole!?!!

it just falls apart, right as soon as i let go...
i give up. ill just eventually yank the stupid tranny and put in a th350 longtail i have around here, and be rid of the whole damn TV cable ordeal with these damn things, screw 700r4's, they are crap.
there is no freaking way to get this cable in with how little room there is under the car :/
just gonna let the car sit(88 caprice) and thats all i can do.. great running driving car but i cannot get this damn cable on, there is no freaking way, its a crock of crap.,
i am buying two other cars in about an hour and half locally an 80's RWD cutlass and an 80's impala,
so ill just drive one of them or the 81 pickup, or something,
thanks

From what I know with the Tv cable installed correctly.. You need to adjust it all the way in and open the throttle blades all the way.. If it pulls out to much your going to be hitting gears on top of each other in a sense..
Then always remember you want a firm shift not a hard shift..
If your having troubles with room.. Drop the cross member secure the trans where you are in control of raising it down a liltle assuring you are not hitting anything with your engine bay..
Good Luck with it..
