700r4 transmissions

HI, I have a 91-Z28 and am doing a total rebuild of the car, that includes a 9in moser rear and a semi mild street 383 aprox 400hp and 425 tq. my question is: What do you think or do you know the limits of a 700r4. I have a professional trans builder and he said I am going to be at the max limit of that trans, but I see where there are kits that make it good for 500/550 hp engines. I know this guy knows what he is talking about, because he holds the world record for the fastest automatic trans car at this point. But am wondering why the difference in oppinion about this, from the manufacture stand point. Do you know anyone that has an engine with a large output and can make a 700r4 live with this kind of power, I also plan to run a 150/175 shot of nitrous because I have set the engine up for that. He told me the best bet would be to chang to a turbo 400 and use a gear vendors unit, but man thats some cash. I know some of you have to be putting it to the ground in a 700r4 so please let me know. THANKS

With the right parts & a 9.5" torque converter, you can make these units to hold up to 600+ HP. I have one in the low 10's at over 130mph for the past several years doing very well (1996 Firebird weighing in at 3,350 lbs) & many others in the 10's & 11's. It can be done.

Thanks alot PROBUILT I am just hoping to go low 12s so that will work for me what brand kit do you suggest is the best rebuild, and what other mods do you think I need. This is for sure my weak link. I have to drive it every day so really cant go with that small of a converter or that big of a stall, do you also have a recomendation on a brand of converter. Have you ever done a conversion like with a turbo 400 and say a gear vendors swap,I know that will cure my problem but just dont have the funds right now for that kind of mod. thanks a bunch for your help in this matter ZEEYAA...

The Street/Strip rebuild kit is what you need for this. Go to http://www.700r4l60e.com/store/custo...&cat=19&page=1 For the torque converter, go to http://www.700r4l60e.com/store/custo...&cat=39&page=1 I do not recommend going with the 12" torque converter, for any performance application. There is very little loss of gas mileage around town, none on the freeway. This setup works very well. Let me know?

I've got a 700R4 behind a 550 horse 355 (88 IROC, Ford 9", 4 link, 4.11, locker, 15.5 MT's) that is an "almost" daily driver. That is, I drive it every chance I get (especially to the local area cruise nights). With a 10" TCI race converter, I have never had a problem from the drive train (have been pretty darn rough on it I might add). A close friend built the tranny with a few simple goodies, but it doesn't take mega bucks to have a good dependable setup.

Thanks PROBUILT, I saw you webb page and looked like what I need to get is the pro kit. One question, on a small converter like that 10in do you not build a lot of heat and also I did not see if it is a lock up unit or not. Also thanks waterbug that makes me feel alot better.

I have not had any situations with these torque converters running hot, and they are lockups. I always recommend an external transmission cooler in any case.

Pro Built Auto's, the kit includes everything that you need for a complete tranny rebuild? Shift kit and all? I think i will be picking up one of these kits relatively soon. I've looking all over for a rebuild kit for 700r4, but just couldn't find one, this made my day a lot better.
