Tranny gear swap... can it be done?

Well, im curious.. I want a 1986 L-69-HO T-5 with the following gears:
1st - 3.35
2nd - 1.93
3rd - 1.29
4th - 1.00
5th - .61

Now, I know that this would be hard transmission to find... But i have a 1987 T-5 that was mated to an LB8:
1st - 4.03
2nd - 2.73
3rd - 1.50
4th - 1.00
5th - .76

Would i be able to buy the gears (or all the guts, if need be) somewhere and replace them all? If i put a T-5 in there i would need to have it rebuilt to hold a lot more power anyway.. and if that is possible.. is there a way for me to get an even lower overdrive gear? I have been toying with the idea of getting a T-56 but pretty much only because of the .56 6th gear.. but if I can have .61 thats fine (or even lower, if possible)..

So, what do you guys think? Can I (hehe, a shop, more than likely, dont know if I wanna screw around with a transmission - never have) do this? And if I can, are there other gear sizes available to me (aftermarket) that I could chose to use besides what came in any stock T-5 (just curious)?

Thanx guys

meh..
$1800 for a TKO? If that was the case, then i would just go with a T-56, spend an extra few hundred.

I just figured the T-5 would be a LOT cheaper in the long run to go with, but if it isn't, then to hell with that

If you want to make it a project, I got a really good advice from this board.

Find a T56 that has problems like popping out of gear. Most people want to buy a tranny and bolt it in, so they wouldn't pay nearly as much for the one that has any kind of wear. I got my T56 for $600 (+70 shipping). All rebuild stuff from D&D performance costed ~$450. Tools (shop press, dial indicator...) $200, and I also used the tools to do my rear end, so that's not just the tranny cost.

In the end for just over a grand I have a tranny which is fully reconditioned and restored. I changed all bearings, synchro rings and other wearables. Plus it was a really cool project.

The biggest problem is that the gear ratios you want are only available in stock gears, which are going to torque limit the trans to about 275 lbs/ft. These ratios were only offered in NWC T5s, which are not exactly known for their strength.

The WC T5s, which have an official torque rating of 300 lbs/ft. are only available in 2.95/1.94/1.34/1.00 ratios. You have some options with a WC T5 though. Superalloy gears are avialable that will increase torque capacity to about 400 lbs/ft. G-Force gearsets are avilable that can take the T5 all the way up to 500+ lbs/ft with the upgraded mainshafts. Send me a PM if you want more info.

hehe true, true... just, if i can get a T-56 setup (that can hold 450ft-lbs) for $2200-$2500 with a .56 overdrive gear.. or a built T-5 for near all those numbers (but the overdrive gear either wont be quite as good or wont be as good at all) then i will prolly go with the T-56...
