nothing yet just picked it up from the junkyard, I figured it would be best to get a look at it before I find out somethings broke after I have it installed

(we dont always have to pretend on that one)
the gears are supposed to spin independantly of each other right? cos they are on bearings?? if i understand correctly

The gears are pressed on to the main shaft and counter shaft. All the things you want to check will be hard to explain to someone that is going to "have it installed". If you can't remove and replace a trans, then you shouldn't pull one apart to inspect it. I'm not trying to be mean, but if you don't have any idea what you're looking at, then its almost impossible to tell you all that you should be checking.

well then thats where i differ from alot of people as i have no problems taking stuff apart and learning something :P
i have a perfectly good 700r4 in the car currently so, its all good.. heh
"have it installed" refers to me and a friend in the driveway, as usual, not a shop :P
thanks for the link!

that pdf seems alot nicer then whats in the service manual, trying to look at the breakdown on that is scary
i dont have it apart I only took the cover off to take a look, couple things i misunderstood
for some reason i thought the gears were supposed to move independantly since they were on bearings but i wasnt really thinking there
i cant really see how reverse works, that actually slides another gear into place with the reverse gear doesnt it?? all i do know is if i slide the lever into reverse and rotate the shaft it slides back out into neutral pretty quick, would that be normal in this case or am I going to be popping out of reverse when its back together and in the car as well?
all the teeth on the (blocker rings?) look good and they slide into gear firmly
