88 2.8 w/ 5 spd, no transmission mounts made?!?!

i got a 88 with 2.8L and a 5 spd, my transmission mount is shot i can lift the tranny up off the crossmember, all parts store dont sell them because they dont make them, to special order is 4-5 weeks for one and i dont even know if it will fit, or dealer is $379.XX !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what am i supposed to do? i read on here somone replaced with a stock one and it broke after 3 times of driving, and others its like a month and they are toast again. so $379 for a rubber mount is out of the question.

the aftermarket one i was wanting to order is 31109R from energy suspension will it work?

besides that i think my only option is to get some rope and tie the transmission down!

part # for the aftermarket mount is 31108g for energey suspension, looks like it goes for $40 CAD, looks like its my only option besides rope. anyone know if this mount will work?

Your mount is the same as the v8 mount. It should be a cheap part at a local parts store, even in Canada. Probably less than $10 for rubber and $30 for poly.

i looked for that thread and couldnt find it, it seems that the only mount that will work with this car is the one from GM for just under $400. ive phoned all the shops and no luck, even asked for 305/5 speed mounts and no go, they only have the auto version.

the V8 mount i bought bolts to the transmission but not to the crossmember, would a differnt crossmember work on my car so i could use the V8 mount?

if i gota go to the dealer im just going to sell this car and get somthing else even tho i really like it.

theres even the heater core hoses only avalible from the dealer. for the ones for the throttle body go for $20 a peice, they are like 3 inchs long.

does your crossmember not have a place to bolt a normal one upto the middle?? could you get a pic of it? whats your current one look like?? seems crazy to me, 2.8 5spd.. very common
must interchange with something cheap

the crossmember has a huge hole in the middle that this big part of the mount fits through and is bolted down to the crossmember with 2 bolts, 1 on each side of it. you can see it in the pic

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...ember+mount+T5
theres another funny looking V6 mount, I thought maybe you meant that one... honestly try the V6 board, they might know better where to find/or whats interchangeable
looking in my service manual looks like '90 got the same mount

ok so i went to the wreckers and they had 2 camaros and a firebird, all the crossmembers were the exact same, 2 piece with bushings inbetween... ok so i pulled the one off, bushings were shot, look like they would be easy to come by at a part store so i took the crossmember for $15

parts stores dont carry them only the dealer! grrrr whats so special about these bushings? i know energey suspension sells them 311009g? but parts store said 4-5 weeks plus a $15 extra because its a special order.

so right now the exhaust shop is welding the 2 peice crossmember togther for $20. i hope it works otherwise ive wasted another $35

why is there bushings inbetween the 2 peices of crossmember? theres the transmount thats a bushing isnt that enough? is it gona work fine for me?

the crossmember is 2 peices a upper and lower part so theres the

transmission
tranny mount
metal plate
2 body looking bushings
metal plate

and all 3 cars were like this

Supposedly the center hole was cracking b/c of stress. So GM came up with a secondary trans mount. Instead of the two ovals, there became two bolt holes. A flat bar got bolted across the middle of the crossmember, separated by two flat bushings. This flat bar had a hole in the middle, which the regular trans mount bolted to.

But I believe this change was also moved to the v8 models.

Gotta love GM!

the V6 cars are funny, i had no idea they had so many different ones... I think theres like 1 selection for a tranny mount for a V8 from 82-92
the normal (at least V8 version of the auto xmember) is just like the one in that pic, and the tranny mount bolts right to it
well I hope it works out

ok so i get the crossmember from the exhaus shop welded togther, looks like it will work... bolted the mount up to the trans and the crossmember is moved a bolt hole towards the front if the car fine but the tranny mount dont line up with the crossmember hole at all, ive tried it every way possible and no luck...

maybe my cars just really special and needs that $380 extra special tranny mount from the dealer.

im going to go drive it off a cliff now cya later

I would think, that a drill, some extra bolts, and a piece or 2 of steel from a welding shop would make whatever you need to work. It's just a bar, attaching to either side of the tunnel, with a hole in the middle for the tranny bushing. If you can get the tranny bushing to mount to the tranny - I'd drill a hole and make something work - anything's better than GM getting another $400 for some idiot engineering! I love these cars - but sometimes ya just gotta wonder what the engineers were smokin'!

Why don't you buy a crossmember on here that has the normal style tranmission mount?

Even with shipping it couldn't be over $50 and then $10 for a regular mount or $25 for poly. Much better idea than the others, though it might mean a little down time, if you could stomach it.

i took the cheap $9 tranny mount and drilled bolt holes far as i could back and then took the crossmember and drill holes in it far as i could.

installed the tranny mount, 1 side of the crossmember, then got the tranny mount bolt to go through the crossmember then pryed the F'n out of it to line up the crossmember bolt holes with the frame rails, it works but that tranny mount bolt looks like it has some stress on it as it is being pulled to the rear of the car on a angle.

all i can say is there is a major differnce, shifter isnt jumping up and down as much anymore, there is a little bit if i blurp the throttle but not to much.

so i got a poly mount on order wich should come in the next few days and i guess look for this other kind of crossmember.

but this all is so much BS, good job GM you *******

thank you all for the help, very apreciated

ok i got the 1 piece V8 auto crossmember today and it bolted directly up with my engergy suspension poly bushing.

1 question tho, i installed it with the preload plate and the car viberates MAD and is much louder, pulled the preload plate out and it runs better but is still pretty loud and viberates. this is normal right? i didnt expect it to be this bad.....
