Will a low mile 700R4 hold up?

I have a 10.5:1 HSR/DuttweillerTFS headed 406(thinking 450-500HP) that I will be swapping into my camaro this winter. I am planning on using the 33K mile transmission. I am easy on my car and will not be using slicks and will hardly ever bring it to the track. I have a edge 3K stall converter that I will be using, otherwise stock. I do have a transgo shift kit, seperator plate, tranny cooler and a B&M deep pan. Should I install any of these parts or just save them for a rebuild? TIA, Steve

at the very least use the cooler and see how you like the shifting while it is stock. you can always add the shift kit if you think it is a little weak.

Opinion:
Depends on 2 factors. Now hard you plan to launch the car (torque) and whether the transmission will see long duration high horsepower runs (140+mph/towing)
Here's a website with lots of goodies and a lot of info about what parts (stock) will fail with how much punishment.
http://transmissionhead.com/
I'm not affiliated with them in any way.

What year trans is it?

What gear ratio was it originally for?

What motor was it originally for ?

Is it one with the susceptible TV link pin or not?(works fine stock, but will go out immediately withh any power increses)

Etc and so forth

later

It will last 1596.3 miles then it will blow

This is another one of those questions that can only be answered when the part finally fails.

It could last a trip around the block or it could last 30 years.

If your taking it easy i would say it should last you a couple years, just remember these things burn out in a couple years behind a measily 305 so take it easy.

stock 700's will not last behind a mild 300HP 350, let alone 500HP.

all the stock 700's i have tried have lasted only 10K max(with my driving style - agressive).

you'll have to take it real easy for it last any while.

where does that website have the stock info? also, what do you think my trans could handle with a transgo shift kit in it? its from a 90 car with the aux valve body.

"Stock +:mega valve and corvette servo, 700R4: 350hp 300ftlb. tq "

"700R4 / 4L60E 3-4 clutch pack will not hold up in a performance / heavy duty 700R4 transmission with over 400 horse power. The reason being the thin steel plates warp up from the extreme heat then the thin clutches burn up. The thin steel plates will not dissipate the heat fast enough. The problem is a combination of thin and narrow design of the steel plates..."

"If you have over 400 foot pounds of torque and a 700R4 transmission you need the Torque Drive kit. The Torque Drive kit is good for up to 700 foot pounds of torque..."

"The Beast" reaction shell. Redesigned sun gear shell for the 700R4 transmission by strengthening and reinforcing the neck collar spline area using thicker material. Known for loosing reverse, 2nd and 4th gears the 700R4 sun gear shell has a very high fatigue failure rate. This is the shell you want to install in a 700R4 that's behind a 300 plus horse power motor. This part holds in 2nd, 4th and reverse."

In a nutshell: With a few parts it can handle 350 HP and 300 ftlbs of torque.
Otherwise about 300 HP.
(EDIT) forgot to add that I'm not affiliated with these folks.

When I tore my 105,000 mile 700R4, it looked like new inside. My Dad asked me why we were rebuilding it. I could have just installed the shift kit and drove it.

I know the previous owner and he had never rebuilt the tranny either.

EDIT: I will admit that it also depends on the type and amount of abuse that the car was subjected to.

Thanks for the opinions and experiences guys. I think I will just do the shift kit/seperator plate, .500 boost valve, corvette servo and billet servo. Just doesn't make sense to me to pull it and rebuild a good working transmission.

Just take it easy on it!

These die behind GM's 150hp gutless wonder with a little bit of abuse

i think ill just throw in the transgo and call it a day and then get it in later. the kit has a servo, boost valve, seperator plate plugs (so its the same as the modified one), etc in it plus other things, and it was only like 100 bucks.

Tryed that Transgo kit in a fairly fresh 700R4 afew years ago behind a 350 hp Superram, lasted about a month. It's the sunshell, band & the clutch packs that need beefing up.

Yup. Later year sunshells seen to be more prone to breakage, for some reason. With minor upgrades, I have had outstanding luck with the 700r4's. Most are not so lucky.

Depends on the year it was released as well. The 700R4 really kinda sucked until (I'm guessing) 1987. I assume since it's a low-mileage transmission, it's probably a rebuild and most of the weak issue should be solved...just food for thought.

Very Good! If it's the original transmission and hasn't been beat to death already, you're in luck. It will eventually die an early death from all that power, but don't go nuts on launches and I'll bet it will last a while.

99% of the time it is a cruiser, but once in awhile I like to give her the wood.

Started slipping & did not want to do the 2-3 shift under power.
