A/T gear selector button pops out of shifter column
I'm not very technically proficient, so please bear with my description of this problem:
I have an 82 se w/ the original v8 and A/T. There is a button which you must depress on the shifter in order to change gears (ie - from park to drive, etc.). This button (which has a pontiac logo and is attached to a thin 3-4 inch long plastic "stick" with several "*****" on it) jumps right out of the shifter column now when released after selecting a new gear. Sometimes it stays in the column, but it often springs out onto the passenger seat as of late. Can you tell me what parts have broken and how I go about fixing this?
Thank you, Keith

my 82 has one of these
mine broke up
if you inspect closely youll see that on the button there is a metal flat tang on both sides
you have to make sure they are bent correctly so they go into the handle correctly or they will bend incorrectly even more and it wont stay put in the handle
which its not, for you
same as it was doing to me
i broke my handle messing around with it and broke a tang off the button too
total loss
these round 82 shifters are a PITA
they like to come apart on you and screw up and stuff
im going to put either an 83 up one, or a B&M proshifter2 that i have in another car in it
good luck
