i beleive there were 2 different kinds of t-10s someone will chime in but, yes the bw super t10 was 1 that was available in 1982 at least (neighbor has 1 in his 82 maro). It handles his 400-450hp quite easily it seems anyways so they are most definetly tougher than a t5.
As for why gm switched to a t5 well maybe different ratios maybe people just wanted a 5 speed. Maybe the bw was more expensive as i'm not a gm market research guy i couldn't realy tell you.
Best gm question of all being why did they stop making f-bodys?
i honestly don't know. All i know is they didn't sell half as many as they should have in there later years.

in 82-83 you could get the crappy saginaw ( reverse in bottom left), or the good T10 (reverse is top left). The T10 is very strong from what i've heard, and is a good solid close ratio trans.
The T5 is an overdrive trans, and overdrive was becoming the way of the future, so cars were swapped over to that.

are these bw t10s hard to find. and how much do they usually go for? would it be much different than swapping from auto to a t5? thanks a lot.

yes, i'm pretty sure they're hard to find.
if you already have the standard, it'd be easier then swapping from one standard to another, then auto->stick....
you could probably re-use the hydraulic clutch setup, but you'd need a different driveshaft I think, and torque arm.
Why downgrade to a non-od trans though?

well i wanted to do a manual conversion anyways, and i wanted to rest assured about being able to handle my motor. and yea, t56 is a little higher priced than i was looking for.
and what about bw t10s from other years? like late 70s, are those useable in our cars, or too much work? thanks.

The T10s designed for 3rdgens are difficult to find... took me 2 years to find a good setup from an '82 Trans Am!!
The older T10s from the 60s and 70s will work, BUT you must have a swap kit for it, which means a torque arm mounted somewhere other than the side of the trans, because there is nowhere to bolt it onto the trans on any but the 3rdgen-specific T10s.
Spohn (see sponsors at the top of the page) makes a crossmember/torque arm kit to install an old-style 4-speed in a 3rdgen chassis.

what else would you need besides the regular t5 swap stuff if you went from a 700r4 to a t10? is it the same stuff?
is this the third gen one?

that swap stuff is way too expensive for the older t10s.

You'll need a longer driveshaft as well, since the T10 is shorter.
I can't tell if thats a 3rdgen T10 or not, I can't see the torque are mounting holes, which would be right under the shifter.

Re: T-10>t-5?
Looks like the EXTREMELY wide ratio version (2.9x 1st gear if memory serves), by the 3 bands cut in the clutch splines; non-"Super" (10-spline 1-1/16" clutch); doesn't look like a 3rd gen one at all of course. Looks like the BH has the large dia hole for the clutch gear bearing retainer, which means it's out of a truck.
Probably out of a mid-60s truck.

OP: Give D and L call, they really know their stuff and stand behind their work. I bought a rebuilt muncie from them years ago, still runs great.
