new engine transmission wont' shift out of first

HELP Me -- transmission will not shift out of first gear -- it does't clunk or bang going into reverse or first but it will not shift out. Engine was swapped before i bought car and then i bought it shortly after - -car sat for 3 years due to a blown ECM fuse under the hood that owner didnt' know about - now I need to figure out WTF is wrong with the trans!

What transmission do you have. If its a th350 most likely you have a vacuum problem.. The modulator is not getting vacuum somehow.

actually by his think i would surmise he has one of the 700-r4 transmissions.. it will not shift out of 1st.. sounds like the tv cable is either not hooked up or not adjusted at all.. might wanna check that out.

heh, I had same problem with a new 700R4 in my V6, I broke some parts while doing a bonzi run between cali and arizona. anyway, TV cable owuldnt affect shifting into other gears. The shifter works if u can put it in park, also, you wouldnt be able to start the car if it were stuck in 1st unless the park/nuetral saftey switch was broken or removed.

SO, I suspect broken internals man. So easy to do when you dont know how to take care of these trannies. You just bought the car right? Ask the previous owner, i bet he will lie.

Hope you didnt pay too much for the car, cuz now you have to buy a new tranny.

but if there is not sufficient line pressure to engage anything above 1st gear. then that could be a factor too.. i dunno. i have never not put my tv cable on.. although it was not adjusted and it refused to shift out of second... readjusted and it has worked flawlessly ever since.. but yea.. perhaps it is a bad tranny not that a 700-r4 is expensive.. you can find them for 200$ or so.. and get one in decent shape froma person doing a t-56 swap or the like

Busted or severely out of whack TV cable will cause trans to basically stay in first gear.

It will shift into second gear only after the gov pressure overrides it and forces the 1-2 shift at WOT rpm's.

Other than that or a jammed tv valve, could cause the same type of issues also.

Check the cable at both ends. If nothing is out of ordinary, than I would say drop the pan and poke around.

lol PS this is the second time u kinda misposted this, we do have a transmission board here too

later

If you have 1st and reverse and no other gears it is a good possibility it is the governor. It may be stuck due to sitting, or the plastic gear has finally met it's demise.

Drivers side, just in front of the tailhousing, under the metal dome cover. Pop the cover off, pull out the governor, check the gear on the end, and check that it is free to move.

RBob.

I will check tomorrow -- it runs a hell of alot better now and if i give it a good dose of the pedal it will shift all the way thru the gears -- if i ease it and wait on it to change - -it shifts hard when it shifts and sometimes i have to let off the gas and then hit it and make it change -- its not slipping when it changes though - so i'll check the TV cable tomorrow

Thanks guys!

Yep. that is most definitely the TV cable needing an adjustment....

at least unless it is fried which is unlikely...

the 700r4 has a common tv valve sticking problem. the only way to kind of fix it without taking the trans out is to take the tv cable off the tb and give it a good tug a couple two three times while it is running. try that!!!
