How bad is this for the rear?

I have a buddy who has an 83 Camaro. A few days ago he was trying to burnout in it. So he holds down the break and brings the revs up to 3 grand. Once the tires break traction he launches it at around 3-4 grand. My question is how bad is this on the rear end?

It's the worst if the tires have uneven traction.

Mostly, it's stupid, period.

a break torque pretty much

i'd think it would be just as hard on the trans if not more

Your friend really does not want to be doing things like this to his car if he wants it to last. If it doesn't break parts it at least takes the life out of them very quickly.

A friend of mine, years ago when we were kids, had a Ford Galaxy with a 460 in it. He was doing a burnout to heat the tires up before a race (illegal street race, not controlled conditions), and the 9 inch 3rd member exploded. Housing was shot too.

I was in charge of the pointing and laughing.

Is this not just a powerbrake?

Yes it is, but the original post did not mention where this activity was taking place, so I assume that it was on a public street. These conditions are not as controlled as at the track, and shtuff happens.

ya it was on a public road. I told him its not like a standard where you can bring the revs up and launch, but the car is kind of crappy to begin with...

I agree- its a powerbrake... they do it at the track, they do it on the street- hell- they do it in the auto shop at school...

Its not like he'se putin it in neutral and revin it and then droppin it..

My F-body gets treated like that on a regular basis. Wouldn't have it any other way.

Its bad for the brakes if you dont have a linelock. Holding the brake pedal down while spining the rears will glaze them in a hurry.

MikeH hit the nail on the head about the rear brakes.A line lock is the smart way to go.Other than this just bring the revs up enough to load the convertor then launch. But power braking is a lot less abusive than to bring up the revs in neutral and then drop into drive.A friend of mine in high school did this and the result was similar to what My3rdgen wrote.Only the bigger problem with that it was his Mom's Caprice.Needless to say he didn't drive for a LONG time after that LOL.Yes it's hard on the whole driveline, not to mention the tires, but we've all done it at 1 time or another.Just safer+smarter to do it at the track.

Yea, I did it once when I was younger. But I poured about 2 gallons of 15-40 Rotella-T engine oil on the ground and made a HUGE smoke show at the truck stop where I worked at that time.
