Tranny too Short???

I installed a driveshaft that I got off ebay that was from a 1995 LT1 Camaro. It is the factory 2.75 inch Aluminum piece. I also used the yoke that came with it since it has a dampner on it. However, the yoke only goes into the tranny about 1.5 inch (this was measured with the rear axle supporting the car's weight in order to get the yoke as far into the tranny as possible to verify it's real position when on the ground), and there is a lot of play in the new tailshaft bushing. I took the drive shaft back out and it is identical in length to the original driveshaft and yoke.

I am starting to wonder if my original vibration problem was this mismatch. Is it possible that I have a tranny that has the right tailshaft housing and the wrong tailshaft? Like a Corvette tailshaft?

How far does the tailshaft stick out of the tailshaft housing on a 700R4 for a 3rdgen F-Body? Mine is flush with the end of the tailshaft housing (not the seal, but the housing itself).

What's up with this?

the output shaft of the tranny is supposed to be even with the housing. with the exception of 4x4's and vette's, all 700's are like this. i have never seen a vette 700 so i don't know what they look like as far as alignment. i think the vette tailhousing is different from the one on the thirdgens so i doubt you have a vette tail housing or output shaft. how did your previous yoke fit in the tranny? was it snug? the yoke on the driveshaft you bought may be worn if it is loose compared to your original.

The tailshaft sticking out about equal to the length of the housing is correct.

As for the slip yoke, the proper measurement is all the way in until it bottoms out then pull it back out 1". Not all yokes are the same. Look inside them to see how far in the splines go. Some only have splines that go in part way. Others have splines that go in all the way. These longer splines all the yoke to go farther onto the output shaft. When checking for proper installation, you want the yoke to bottom out inside the tranny, not have the output shaft bottom out on the splines.

I just went out and looked at the yoke again. I removed the driveshaft and the output shaft of the tranny is not quite flush with the housing end, its close though, it sticks out around 1/2 an inch.

When installed, and the axle is in the ride height position, the yoke goes into the tranny housing around 2 inches (+/- 1/8th inch).

The number 2 arrow in the pic points to how far into the housing the yoke will go when not connected to the driveshaft (approximately an inch and a quarter to an inch and three eighths). Arrow 1 points to the approximate spot where the end of the yoke is inside the tranny, when the axle is in the ride height position. This pic was taken with the rear axle in the ride height position.

Buy looking at the mark on the old yoke where the seal rode, this yoke is in the tranny the same distance as the old yoke. I would like to see it go in another half inch or so.

Looks fine to me. There's a bunch of different length yokes so they don't all fit the same. Mine looks worse than that. I actually had to cut about an inch off the end of my yoke because it was too long and it still sticks out of the tranny farther than that.

Since you say the driveshaft and yoke are the same length as your old one, I wouldn't worry about where it was riding in it's original car.

Cool, thanks. I am thinking that the yoke is worn out then because there is too much slop. I am thinking that I will have to get a new yoke and a new output shaft for the tranny.

I wish I had gotten a new output shaft when I rebuilt the tranny!
