speedometer failed

speedometer failed
Hey everyone,
So I changed from a 2.73 to a 3.23 gear ratio out back. I then changed the drive and driven gears in my 700R4 trans. The speedometer (odometer too)worked for about a 1/4 mile then died. I have a 1991 Pontiac Trans am. Would this most likly be a sensor? It didn't act up, it just stopped working all together. Electronics are my down fall, so if you have any advice, it will be warmly welcomed.
P.S. It don't have to be an electronic problem, but it seems to be the most logical answer.
