700r4 checkballs
i have a 700r4 out of an 87 trans am, and i am need of some despret help of knowing where all the checkballs go, i mean everyone! I have a manual for the transmission and according to it i have the main ones that it is showing, two in the valve body and 6 in the case. In the text it talks about another one that cant come out because of a metal cage around it, it doesnt show this one it the pictures and i found another one in the case with a metal cage around it to that so far i havent read anything about it yet. maybe to better help me i can tell u that where i am. so far i just took the governor out and the output shaft out, the whole imput housing assembly is out, i just took the race out for the lo and reverse roller clutch, a snap ring, and then the lower roller clutch assembly, the the lo and reverse clutch support assembly is at the very top, and all the way down to the low reverse piston is left, so some where from taking that governor out and output shaft out, it has just shown up. PLEASE HELP!!!
Man, the guy you want to talk to is on vacation. He probably would not be much help though, if you dont have a manual. But definatley more help than me.
Can you get yourself an ATSG service manual? I have mine here, and there are good pics in it to where they go, in the valve body. How many do you have anyway?
Maybe I can figure out how to post the diagrams up for you.

yes i have one of those manuals, i have 2 in the valve body and 6 in the case. i was reading thru there there and models with a auxillary valve body, which i have, will have one that is caged in and some that dont, which will just be laying on the spacer plate when u take it apart. if you read later in the manual, it says that some will have a caged in checkball in the case, i have this one as well, which is really easy to see, towards the governor end, there is also one i have that is caged in that is up closer towards the bellhousing and u have to look deep down in the case for that one. so far i have counted 2 in valve body, 6 loose ones in case, 2 caged in in case which is 10, but i dont remeber getting one out of the auxillary valve body. so i think that there is suppose to be 11, could u counted to see what u think
----------
but u dont think that there is any checkballs that are around the low roller in the case or that there isnt one to do with the governor.

i talked to my teacher at school and he said that there is not checkballs that are near the support or the governor, and i went home and found out that my auxillary valve body is one that doesnt have a caged in check ball so it must of came out of there. So that problem is solved.

if you hve a manual with a picture like the one brutal form is showing, follow it as to the check ball location. the one towards the bell housing that you have to look deep to see is actually the 3rd accumulator ball. leave it alone. the other caged ball you are talking about towards the govenor i'm not sure what it is. it might be particular to auxiliary units but i can't find a refernce to it either. as far as loose *****, you will hjave 9 total if you are using the TV exhaust ball. 2 in the valve body, 6 in the case, and one in the aux valve body.

all i know is they only go in one way. i ususally throw them away and use a case saver. you have to put the spring in brfore the low/reverse housing. if the spring isn't in correctly, the low/reverse housing won't go in. with the case setting on the valvebody side, the spring goes in the lower right portion of the case. it sits between the teeth of the steels for the low/reverse clutch. the open end faces toward the bell housing. the longer side goes to the left i think.
