1995 z28 rear end

actually this question is really for all rear ends.

I have a leak in the front of the rear end, where the driveshaft yoke enters and gets bolted to the u joint. what do i need to replace?

thanks

The technical name for it is a pinion seal.

is the pinion seal pressed in or is it held in by the u joint assembly? And could you give me the average time this job would take to complete?

thanks

As with most seals, yes it is pressed into the housing.

Depending on your skills, it could be a couple hour job.

A friend of mine said i had to take the rear end apart to change it. Mind you he owns a mustang so his pinion seal may be different.

But anyways he is saying i have to take the axles out posi out and remove the pinion out of the back of the rear to swap seals. Any truth? I doubt it based on your saying a couple hour job.

Since taking off wheels, brakes, axles, posi, swapping the seals and re-assembling would take me the better part of a day.

Droping the shaft, wedging a seal off , tapping a new one in and filling up the fluids is an hour maybe a little over depending how hard it is to come out.

thanks for any clarification.

Check for bearing play. You might replace a seal, when you also need a bearing too.

Sounds like your buddy was talking about axle seals.

The pinion seal requires you to unbolt the driveshaft, pull the yolk and pop out the seal. Its not a very lengthly project but may take a few hours depending on your skill level.

okay sounds good.

and in addition to my pinion seal....

i have an oil leak in the passenger side of my 305. Its dripping onto the starter area and then on to my header's collectors. Its not the valve covers. So i take it i have 2 culprits...rear main seal (85 is one piece iirc) or intake gasket?

just making sure.
