Drag Racing a T-56?

I am really wanting to swap to a t 56, but am wondering if it will handle drag racing abuse?

Car has slicks, 200 shot of N2O and new motor will be right at 475 flywhell hp.

So, will a T 56 last? Or what should be done to beef it up?

It's been done once or twice, since they come stock in 1992-2002 Z28 & Trans Am. Check with some of those people and see what kind of results they're getting.

I don't think they had T-56's before 96 or 98. Didnt the earlier ones have M6's?

the T-56 was originally designed for the dogde viper and they have had them since '92, camaro's and firebirds got there first version in 93, which has lower gear ratios in 1st, 5th, and 6th than the current ones and is significantly weaker then the current ones, in 94 they changed the gear ratios to the current gear ratios, but the '94 version is still considered weaker, in 95 they strengthened the transmission, and in '98 they changed the front plate and input shaft to work with the new gen III small block, and Borg-warner sold the T-56 division to tremic, which promptly moved production to Mexico, and even though it is technically the same there have been more problems with the Mexican made tremic transmissions then with the older Borg-warner versions. Also as a side note, the corvette and the cobra mustangs also get the T-56. ,with regards to the M6 in 1992 there was a limited production of 3rd gens that got a M6, I forgot what company made it but I believe it was German, and also used in the Porsche

"Thinking" something doesn't make it so.

They started putting the T-56 in Camaro and Firebird V8 in 93.

M6 = 6-speed manual = T-56 for the most part

T-56 Drag Racing

I've got a Viper T-56 in my 85 Trans Am. In front of that is a 406 c.i. Stealth Ram Injected motor with a McLeod Street Twin clutch. I've had over 200+ drag race launches (with slicks), and I've been raod racing the car on and off for about 2 years now. The T-56 takes plenty of abuse, and it loves it all. I did the conversion in '99, same tranny, and I just rebuilt it in 2005 (the first gear synchro was missing 2 teeth). I've been trying for some years now to destroy that tranny and it's stood up to the test. I vote a big YES for the T-56.

P.S.- The stock T-56 in my buddy's SS Camaro (450 HP Nitrous Injected LS2) has taken quite some abuse too, and hasn't given in. Plus, you get an extra overdrive gear, great for Highway driving.

a t-56 will take about as much abuse you could throw at it...I have one behind my modded ls-1 and it fine

I once asked for a side by side comparison between the auto and the T56 in drag applications. The general consensis was that the T56 had consistantly slower 60' times, but higher top speed at the 1/4. This was attributed to having to launch the clutch(slower 60's), but less paracitic drag(giving higher trap speed)
