4L60E problem

I know this isn't about a third gen but I thought you guys still might be able to help. I have a 94 Z28 which does not want to downshift unless you manually shift it. It still upshifts fine but will not downshift at all. Any suggestions on what to check for before taking it to a shop. Thanks for the help.

It won't downshift in any gear at all? Does the computer give you any codes? If it is a trans sensor/switch problem then the computer will throw a code. You need to scan it while driving and get some info on what is happening.

I don't currently have a code reader but am interested in getting one. I was just wondering where I can get a decent one for not too much money. Any suggestions. Thanks.

you can get a generic obd2 code reader from any parts store that will tell you the problem. Autozone in my area will scan it for free, maybe yours will too. You will need to purchase some extra equipment in order to scan it while driving. If you are willing to spend the extra money, the cable to interface with the car is from AKM Electronics Home Page and the software can be had from LT1edit, pcmforless, tunerCAT, etc... This stuff is not for the average guy who just wants to check for trouble codes. If you are serious about it this will let you reprogram your computer while you are at it. I would not suggest getting that deep without doing your homework.

Car: 83 T-Top w/ 85 Z-28 and 91 RS parts
Engine: 377 (in progress)
Transmission: 700-R4 (unless i find a t-56)
Axle/Gears: from the Z
get a paper clip, jump A and B in the connector under the dash and count the flashes of the check engine or service engine soon light. call the local parts house w/ the codes and see what they are. the codes are 2 digits, represented by a series of flashes, a pause and another series of flashes. each code repeats 3 times and goes to the next. if all you get is a code 12, then the computer thinks everything is fine. might want to check the connector on the pass side of the trans for looseness/corrosion.
