T56 Questions.

FINALLY! I may be picking up my T-56 this weekend and i have a few questions and stuff to look for.

Now the guy owns a 93 camaro but he said he pulled this from a 97. Can i verify that with some kind of stamp/ID on the tranny when i see it? Do they have any #s on them and what do they mean? Is it possible to find out what year the tranny is? I want to make sure i dont get a 1993 T56.

He is giving me everything i need except the pedals so ill have to buy that seperate off the boards or from a junkyard.(If anyone has some for sale, PM me)

Ive read thread after thread about installing one in an auto car...im still a little unsure about a few things:

I need the Dakota box for the speedo correct and to match everything so i dont have a funk idle? This is a must right?

Now for a starter. Ive heard you have to use a starter from a manual car or grind the stock one. Ive read all different responces some said use a mini-starter or from a 4th gen. Which is it?

My car is a 1 pc rear main seal correct? And its a good idea to go ahead and replace this while i have the tranny out right...? Lookin at summit what material should i buy? The most expensive? Silcone, Rubber, or Teflon?

Cutting a hole in the tranny tunnel...this will prolly just be a tackle it when I get to it deal...but i will be cutting a hole about 2 inches farther back to fit the tranny?

I will be purchasing a Spohn Crossmember as i see that is the crossmember of choice and i have always been satisfied to the max with anything i bought from Spohn.

Other then that am i good to go!? I just want to make sure i got all my questions answers before i buy/install my dream transmission!

Thank you!

ok....well there is a 3 letter code on the transmission that will tell you what trans you have....a '93, a '94 a '95-'97 or a '98-'02, mine is a '97 and my code is, DLF all '95-'97 had this code.

secondly...if you have manual pedals from a manual 3rd gen they will work, the part # for the master cylinder is the same from '84-'02, but the pull-style clutch has allot less travel than a conventional clutch, so the pedal will release at the top of it's through, some people like that others don't, GM fixed this potential prob by moving the attachment point of the pin closer to the pivot point so it moves the master cylinder rod less, depending what you like you can go with either 3rd gen pedals and deal with a high pedal (which I personally like) or go through the trouble of doing the pedal swap and having a reg pedal

next...dakoda box...your car is a 92...so the speed signal goes to the computer too...so you need the box

next item....starter....you need a LT1 starter or a mini starter.

next item...good idea to change the seal out...not sure what material is the best...I have a 2-piece and use neoprie...but make sure you use the LT1 flywheel...the one that came with your car will not work

next item...the hole...yup...you have to cut it about 2" further back

and the last item...the crossmember...spohn make a good one, I recommend getting the one W/ the torque arm attached to it

hope this helps

It helps greatly, thank you. That answered most of my questions. I hope this deal works out for me. The guy is actually selling it with a hurst shifter and a Mcleod Clutch/Flywheel(apparently they are kinda the best and go for over $1k new). I just hope it really is a 94-97 T56.

If I could go back and do it again, I would buy this crossmember. Longtube T56 Swap CrossmemberSkulte Performance Designs It frees up some room under the car for longtube headers. Even if you dont plan on running longtubes, it gives you better ground clearance then the Spohn one. (what I currently have) The Spohn crossmember seems to hang down the lowest of all the ones Ive seen. Just my .02c

get that crossmember above, or the one made by "drews" on this board... the spohn one doesnt leave room for a real exhaust.

the answers to everything else you asked, is in a sticky in the "FAQ" forum...

ya big thanks to your Mr.Dude also i read that whole thread...just i was still a little unsure because so many people did different things.

Thanks.

I will have to look into skulte's crossmember. I remember reading about one that hangs too low and takes too much clearance i wasnt sure which.

Apparently i will need to find the correct right pigtail connector to plug into the VSS on the tranny. Can someone help me with this? I found this part # but no luck on GM parts direct...

#12101899

Also read i could use a Coolant Temperature Sensor pigtail also? If thats the case i will be hitting the yard.

Stop trying to get me to spend more money!

Ive had a look at it and its nice, but all i want from my car now is to be able to change my own gears and im trying to make it as cheap of a swap as possible without adding more extras with it.
