Shifter cable clip on transmission

Hi all,

I had a bit of an accident with my car the other day. I put the car in park and later turned the engine on. The car immediately drove itself forward and smacked into my mate's garage. The cause of this was the clip that attaches the shifter cable to the side of the transmission on my 700-R4. This clip had come off when I put the shifter into park and the transmission remained in drive, and cos when I started the car, the computer saw that the shifter was in park and thought it was OK to start the car. Anyway...

Could someone tell me exactly how this clip should install? Or better yet, would someone mind taking a photo or two of the underside of their car of this clip so I can get a real good look as to how this clip should install? It would be greatly appreciated.

The cable bracket is mounted to the transmission by two of the pan bolts. Sounds more like you've got a broken cable.

The cable isn't broken at all. I've recently put a new engine in my car and that clip that holds the cable in place on the side of trans likes to pop out of place, causing the cable to get free of the bracket. So it seems to me I was a dufuss and didn't put the clip in properly, which is why I need instruction on how to correctly install it.

Anybody? Even a part number would be useful.

This is for an 82 Camaro, but the relevant bits should be the same. Which part are you missing?

Thanks for that.

I'm after part number 15. Do you know what the official name for it it?

GM calls it a control cable retainer, P/N 477093.

Cool, thanks for that.

Just wondering if you wouldn't mind taking a photo of how it's installed or describing in some detail how it's installed, it really would be appreciated.

I don't have anything around to take a picture of, sorry.

It should be pretty straight forward though, fit the cable into the bracket, then clip the retainer into a grove on the cable against the bracket.

If anyone reading this could take a picture for me that would be great...

You're right, installing it should be pretty straight forward. But for one reason or another my clip pop off the bracket causing my car to smack into a garage. So understandably I don't want to repeat the event and want to make damn sure it's in place correctly, hence the request for a picture.
