T-5 tail shaft removal for vss issues

The trans is a 87 T-5 ... I have to remove my tail shaft since I am getting a vss issue however I'm sure it has to do with the gear in the trans since if I use a drill on my vss sensor the speedo works.

I see no signs of a gear in there to drive the vss also can't feel a gear. anyone have a picture of what it would look like in there.

so how hard is it to remove the tailshaft and replace this gear. I realize about removing all the stuff attached to the trans but the shifter looks like it could be a problem etc. etc. and I really dont feel like dropping the trans again, so how hard is this while in the car.

also to avoid more issues what gears would I use to make sure the speedo is correct here is what the car has

373 gears
235/60/15 tires

and I am using a 1990 vss if it makes a difference

Sorry, dude, but even if you were to get the shifter off without dropping the trans, you would still have to drop the trans to get the upper bolts off. Also, you need a tube of RTV to seal it back up when you are done. You don't have to remove the trans altogether, just lower it enough to get the tail housing off.

It's easier to feel than see. YOu have to run your fingers from front to back at the top of the hole. This is the easiest way to feel the gear teeth. If you still don't have any, then the gear is stripped in that spot, or it's missing altogether (don't know how that would happen, but I've learned anything is possible).

you better make sure for sure that the gear is fomr some real crazy reason missing or not, cuz its gonna take some real effort andprobably cussing to do this with the trans in the car

i dont know how or why the gear would be missing

have you checked the BRAKE fuse

my brothers 92 with VSs had no speedometer and he had no clue why it was not working, last night we removed the cluster and cleaned all the contacts and everything and it still wasnt working, so we checked fuses and he freaking had removed the BRAKE fuseone time when he said he blew his dome lamp fuse, he used the BRAKe fuse without thinking that the BRAKe fuse was important,

well the BRAKE fuse runs the VSS speedo

i wanted to smack him after we found that, after we had taken the dash all apart..

speedo works fine now, with a freaking fuse in it

..

good luck

if I spin my vss sensor with a drill the speedometer works. this t-5 was rebuilt my guess is they forgot to put the drive gear back on the tailshaft

With the driven gear out of the tail shaft, I'd think you'd be able to see the drive gear (if there is one). Check the following link:
