how to find out if tranny has a lock up converter
I have a 1984 Z28 with a 700r4 how would you figure out if the stall converter is a lock or non lockup?

If it's a stock converter, it has a clutch. If it's an aftermarket converter, it almost certainly has a clutch unless it's some kind of racing converter with an insane stall.

I have a 3,000 stall converter. I'am aslo wondering because I got antoher tranny and its out of a 86 blazer if that matters. I just put in a 355 motor and I want to yank the computer out because I have no emissions stuff anymore. The only thing I can think the computer might be need for is the tranny. Any suggestions??

Yes, the computer controls the locking of the torque converter. Computer or not, a stock 700R4 needs the torque converter to lock.
By "no emissions" stuff, do you mean you no longer have the computer controlled carb and distributor as well?

I have no air tubes, cat conveter,cc carb,or cc distributor,or smog pump. With all of that not there the computer will still control the covertor well ?

No, computer control is all or nothing. There are a dozen and one ways to get the TCC to lock without the computer, though.

You'll be giving up some gas mileage, and flow to the cooler will be reduced, causing excess heat in the transmission and reduced life.

Any decent tranny shop should be able to wire a pressure switch in the valve body assy to control the tcc.
