My odd-ball transmission mount...

I recently discovered, after breaking my tranny mount, that the mount on my V6 T5 '89 RS was unlike almost every RWD vehicle GM made! My local parts store didn't stock it and said that they'd never seen one like it! The local GM parts dealer quoted me almost $300 for a new one! It seems that just about everyone has the "standard" mount and there isn't much info about the one I had. Thankfully, a couple guys on this forum pointed out that any cross member from '84-'92, along with the mount itself, would bolt right up to my car. Long story short, today I went to the bone yard and scored a cross member with mount (from an '86 SC) for $14 and it did indeed bolt right up!!! The pics are of the original mount (bottom) and the "new" one (top). In the second pic you can see the carnage that caused me so much grief!

Look closely at my pics. My new one does have that secondary spacer thing. From the responces to your post regarding this piece, it seems like it was primarily used on manual trans cars which is just fine since I have a T-5.

You're right. My bad. I'm not exactly sure about the what or why of this piece, but it will work for you. I believe that GM still has the rubber bushings. I used poly. If I had to replace again, I might go with rubber.

All of my thirdgens had that style crossmember for the trans.. two were auto v-8's and 1 was a t5 V8... I think they jsut used them in the early years perhaps of the thirdgen.

Yeah, I've only seen that particular setup on the earlier thirdgens. I think they did it possibly as a vibration damper. If it works just fine, I don't see the harm in using it. But if it bothers you, you can always get the newer style without the secondary piece. Either of them are better than that stupid round donut mount though!

what you had was the rare, and used in 2 years only oil filled mount.

worst idea they ever had, used that mount in 89 and a short time in 90, and quickly went back to the standard rubber mount. '

that mount sells for like $300 at gm, and for the old/newer style its like $20.... was too uneconomical, even for gm...

More like $90 if my dealership had it right.
