Lock up converter

How can I tell if my converter is locking up??? On my older car (84 camaro) I could tap the brake, and it would come out of lock up, and RPM up a bit...I even wired a lock up switch in the brake line wires so I could turn it on and off when I wanted...On my 89 tapping the brake makes no RPM change.....Ideas guys???? If its not working, what are the most likely causes???? thanks, for any help, Tom

wire a push button switch between term A and F on your aldl connector and that should lock your converter, if it don't lock your tcc solenoid needs replaced or a wire is broke.

Hey Tom, Thanks alot for the info...Where is this solenoid located??? I might just try the switch thing, that would be cool...Will it harm anything (Besides milage) if the converter is not lockingup???? Should'nt you be able to tell when it locks, and unlocks??? On my older thirdgen, I could just barley tap the brake, and it would unlock...Thanks again, Tom

You should be able to feel it engage at highway speed in O/D if it's working correctly .. as for the switch I wouldent use that as anything except a test device I have seen a few done with a switch burn the trans up when accidently left on when coming off the highway ... checking the wireing and connections would be a good starting point..
