Broken Tranny Mount?
Broken Tranny Mount?
Today I was noticing that whenever my firebird shifts into gear at high rpm (ie above 3 thousand) the tranny makes a clunk and it feels like it is going to jump into the seat next to me. Is it possible that I have a broken tranny mount?
That's exactly what it sounds like. Replace with the energy suspension mount and you won't have to worry about it for a good long while after that. Should be in stock and around $30-40 at your local parts houses.

exactly.
Drop in a decent poly mount and you should be fine for a while, the OE style rubber ones dont last very long especially if you drive hard!

Yea I haven't gotten a chance to look because my dad took the keys to the garage to work and that is where the jack is. What exactly will it look like if it is broken? Is it an easy enough repair that I can do it? I'm not too good but I have done a little work on the car before, just fixing the cooling system and whatnot.

slowly jack up on the tailshaft of the tranny. chances are you will see it lift right off the crossmember. Also take a look straight up, you will most likely see a bunch of scrapes in the tunnel from the yolk smashing into it!

i dont know what a shop would charge, probably an hour @ whatever the local rate. the mount, depending on whick one you get (go poly if you can) is somewhere in the neighborhood of $10-40
99.999% it is the trans mount, its a relatively easy fix. jack up the car, throw it on blocks. jack the tranny up as far as it wants to go, wrestle out the 3 bolts then start working backwards...
I did mine out in the gravel driveway a few times, its not a big chore!

I was like you when i first got my car...i was kinda scared cause it sounds a little confusing and a pain in the *** job...but its really not at all. Either jack up the tail end of the tranny(if you can) or get a 2x4 wood plank and put it on the jack, raise it up so thats its evenly across the pan and put pressure on it. Then remove the 4 crossmember bolts and the middle nut that goes to the mount itself. Remove crossmember, old mount, bolt new mount in, bolt crossmember back in, and release the jack. Your done.
It should be very obvious if that indeed is your problem, first youll prolly be able to notice cracks in the rubber if its not too greasy and second ull be able to jack up the tranny and watch it leave the crossmember some.
Good luck.

just remember the first thing you should learn about working under your car is safety. use your jackstands and use your head. and thank god your not doing a transmission in your driveway. i did that twice already

I dont drive my car very hard, but my friend noticed the symptoms before I did.
It's a new car, though.
Anyway, I got a buddy to help me out with it and as soon as I saw the old mount I knew my friend wasnt kidding about that mount being bad. It was broken right in half.
