T5 & 3.23 gears... What speedo gears do I need?
Hey everyone,
I have been searching for about 45min now..And I found plenty of info for 700R4's and T5's w/3.73 gears... but nothing for my set-up. I have 3.23 gears in my car and I am installing a T5 from a car with 3.08's. What gear(s) do I need to replace & what gear should I replace it with? According to our Tech Info pages... 87 Cars with the LG4 V8 & a T5 came with 3.23's, so I know the magic combonation has to be out there somewhere.
Thanks in Advance,
Mark B

Do you guys know what might be in the trans right now? It was setup for a 3.08 gear. I did some math on a napkin in front of me and the only combonation that would make sense is:
3.08 Gear = 9 Tooth Drive & 22 Tooth Driven
3.23 Gear = 7 Tooth Drive & 18 Tooth Driven.
That would give me about a 5% difference which is what I need. Therefore I need to replace BOTH of the gears. Does that sound right?

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Something else.
Probably 8 teeth and something else driven.
Speedo gears aren't so hard. Think about it...
How does the odometer work? 3 seconds....

It's a turns counter.
1000 turns of the cable = 1 mile. That's the magic constant that works ALL cable speedos.
All you gotta do, is calculate how many times your drive shaft turns in one mile, and then, your "correct" speedo gear (regardless of what "came" in any of them) is the driven-to-drive ratio that make the cable spin as close as possible to 1000 times in 1 mile.
It's just a car, it's not brain surgery or something tough like that.

8 teeth driven (Black)
20 teeth drive (blue w/ plastic shaft)
would also work, but you can't get an 8 tooth except for the 28 spline (ford) output shaft. The GM output shaft is 27 spline. You could probably do some fancy machining to make it work, but I'd just try to get that 18 tooth drive gear... and if you find a place to get them, pick one up for ME, thanks.
you can get mechanical speedo (driven) gears for muncie trannies that will work, but I'm guessing youre using an electronic VSS in your 91.
I've been to all of the local car dealers trying to get the same stuff for my car since I switched to 3.23's with my 92 RS T5

with 4.10 gears
and 28" tires:
7 tooth drive
24 tooth driven (I don't even know if this exists though, maybe for a muncie mechanical speedometer)
26" tires: (both are easy to get)
7 tooth drive
22 tooth driven

i thought it would be the other way around with 26" tires it would be roughly 24 driven and with 28" tires it would be 22 Driven.
I dont have to change the Drive gear at all? Just the Driven gear?
Can someone verify this and are those the correct gears I would need For that set-up i listed?
Thank You,

Lets see if I can get lazy...Does a 23 tooth driven gear exist? Combined with the 9 tooth drive gear I aleady have.... My Speedo will only be off 1%. I can handle that. So at 100mph, my speedo is going to read 101mph.

23 driven exists in a mechanical speedo. If you wanted to carve a "D" shaped hole in the gear you could HOPE it works.

This place sells almost any speedo gear you could want.

The above combo is the correct baseline speedo gears for a T5 w/3.23 rearend gears.
