What did you set your back lash at? It's been a hella long time since I've done a rear end, but if memory serves me right...which it rarely does....I beleive the back lash should be about .007 or .07... I think. I'm sure the chilton's manual has the correct measurement. Not having the correct back lash or new gears can cause noise from your rear end.

Backlash is set by moving shims from side to side on the outside of the carrier bearing races. Your new gearset will have the back lash spec stamped on the ring gear. It is measured with a dial indicator and magnetic base.

Did you do a gear pattern check? From what your saying the coast side is making the noise.

As said above u set the backlash with shims on either side of the Carrier.

to Check backlash * in case u dont know or dont remeber* You want your main caps torqued and all your other things done and mount a dial idicator on a flat surface near by and then put the tip of the DI On the underside of one of the ring's Teeth put pressure on the DI Zero it out and then watch while u push the ring up and down to see how much back-lash you have.

I hope your Set your pinon bearing preload?

Setting up gears is not something we can walk you thru over the internet. Take it to an experienced mechanic with the proper tools.

This is why I tell people gear installs are not something a backyard mechanic can do on his own.

All of the info is in this forum if you just look. I was clueless on mine and read on here for a while, then set up the gears and they were perfect. It isn't rocket science.

Best thing you can do with one of these rear ends is ditch that crush sleeve and put a solid bearing spacer in.

You got lucky then, and took the time to read and make yourself knowledgeable on the subject. Most people around here just throw themselves into a project and then half-*** it because its cheaper that way.

The worst problem with your situation is that a lot of times, once you establish a wear pattern in the gears, even if you correct everything, they'll always be noisy. Once you get everything set up right, if they're still noisy, unfortunately you'll have to get a new set of gears and set them up right the first time.

if you didn't do the install correctly you can't just start over the gears are trash. you'll need a new set liek Pat said above. you should of been asking more questions before you started and maybe looking at a manual.

because that's the result you were looking for, the gears are still trash. you've not said anything so far to show you have the slightest clue about what you're doing.

I was the first person to tell him to get help from someone with experience in his first thread on this subject, see page two, I didn't think I steered him wrong, nor gave any bad advice, but I got my face stomped into the mud, anyhow I'm just gonna say it goes to show rear gears are something you gotta be taught to do, sure some people can figure it out, but not everyone is a rocket scientist, theres a big difference between auto enthusiasts and auto mechanics, I learned at least 80% of what I know from watching other people and PAYING ATTENTION ! theres my two cents!

I agree I've done it in my 2 years of auto shop, basically college class, and I passed the test with a 100%, and suposedly I should be able to do it at professional level, and even Im to afraid to do my own, plus that was like 2 yrs ago
