82 Z28

Just posted about my 92 Z28 but am thinking about picking up an 82 Z28 for my son. It is rust free and runs good and it has a stock 4 speed manual in it. Will any stronger 4 speed like a muncie, Super t10 bolt into its place so that I could get rid of the Wide Ratio Transmission.

Larry,

Pick up a T5 transmission for the car. It will be a great driver and should be cheeper then a super T10. I would use a 84 & up T5.

One thing to check on the 82 is the area where the Z-bar mounts to the frame rail. They are notorious for stress cracking. Also if you are going to swap out to a 5 speed you will need a hydraulic setup out of a later model car as well as the pedal setup. I swapped my T-10 for a T-5 and I love it. The T-10 is fairly bullet proof though. PM me if you have any questions.

Alright tiger, first things first;
(may want to put more info in your thread title, '82 Z-28 doesn't really say much eh?)

You may very well have a super T-10 in it stock. Mine did/does.
Is reverse forward left, or back left? Forward left = T-10, back left = saginaw.

You can swap in a super T-10, just re-use your existing bellhousing.
Or you can swap in a T5, same deal. If you're taking a T5 from another F-body (obviously, not much other choices), then you can get it hydraulically actuated by using the hydraulic bellhousing, and all the miscellaneous bits.

i also have an 82 z28

and as stated above i di crack my z bar, not fun to find a new one,

but to get started as stated above most likely a super t10 already. but id not muncie will not bolt right up.

to swap a T-5 there is more than just a tranny and bellousing. the driveshaft and tourqe arm are different length then the t-10

and for the rcord if u did want to swap to a t-5, if u were lucky enough to find an early 83 with qa T-5 and yes the were made it was an option, they had mechanical clutch linkage just as the 82s , they switched mid year to the hydralic

3,900 of the cars were made in 83 with a 4 speed because the T_5 was an option but until half way thru it was still mechanical

Re: 82 Z28

Ok I finally found me a 83' bellhousing for my t-10 to t-5 swap. I want the overdrive as the car has 4.10's out back. I have the trans, and my t-10 has the 28 spline input shaft so I won't have to change clutches. My question is will I be able to reuse the crossmember, driveshaft, torque arm, and tq arm mount???
Any experience here will help thanks! Sorry if I hijacked the thread... Also what about the speedo cable and gears...

Re: 82 Z28

I'm in the middle of Swapping a ST-10 in place of my 700R4 in my 84. I Know 'I" need the croosmember, and I'm pretty sure I need the Driveshaft but I don't know about the torque arm and mines 84 not an 83.

Re: 82 Z28

T10->T5

You will need the shorter DS, from a 700R4 car
You need a new crossmember
TQarm mount and TQ arm - I'm not sure about. I thought the main difference was the way the lips faced, so as long as your mount matches the arm, then you're ok. So I *think* you can use your existing T10 one, just use the TA mount from it as well.

Re: 82 Z28

on my 700R4 - ST-10 Swap

the Crossmembers look identical but the Driveshaft is longer, about an inch and a 1/2 .

still unsure about the toque arm

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: 82 Z28

I believe you'll find that the 4-speed requires the 82-specific crossmember, which is actually shorter than the later one, and mounts in a different hole pattern (toward the front of the car).

Sonix, who has a T-10 in his car, says the TA is the same; so I'll just have to take his word for that.
