I know there's something about a pilot bushing, butr not sure how it looks or anything. The 305 came from what I think was a T5 car, my buddy dropped in a L98 so not sure if he remove the pilot bushing or whatever.
How can I tell for sure ?

It installs right in the middle of the the back of the crank. The ID is the same size as the non-splined portion of the trans input shaft. It's brass (if it's a bushing) but some folks also use a bearing. If your clutch/pressure plate is removed, it's real easy to spot.

yeah its pretty obvious if theres a pilot bushing in there or not
if the hole in the crank is large and doesnt step down, then it doesnt have one
if you run an auto trans and it has a bushing in it then you dont have to remove it, you can leave it in there it will be fine

Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
A picture is worth 1000 words, right?
Here's somebody else's beautiful pic that I stole, of a crank with a pilot bearing in it.

So without the bearing, that hole would be slightly bigger, correct ?
So one doesn't have to remove it, in order to use an automatic transmission ?

Yeah, you probably don't need to remove it to run an auto, but if it really bothers you, just go to about any large auto parts chain store and rent a pilot bushing remover tool. They're usually free, just have to put down a deposit, which you get back when you return the tool.

I checked and yeah, it does have a bushing in it, so I may just rent a remover when I get a balancer installer/puller from Autozone.
Can WD-40 hurt the engine ? If you coat the insides of it, crankshaft, cylinders etc ? Waiting for the engine to dry now that I've washed it out for the hmmm tenth time or so.

I wouldn't think that WD-40 would hurt anything, in fact, it's supposed to help prevent rust. Another oil you could use on the cylinder walls is Marvel Mystery Oil. It works really well for that purpose. As far as your pilot bushing goes, I've read equal posts on here with half the people saying it will interfere with the "button" on the torque converter, and the other half saying it won't, so if you want to be on the safe side, I'd say go ahead and remove it.

Been too busy with other things to finish the engine so *shrug* I hope it does have the pump still ... since the Haynes manual SUCKS when it comes to pics and details as to how to do the oil pump

Yes, it is my first V8 "rebuild", in case you guys haven't guessed it already.
Nope, I don't have an oil pump, now question is:
Should I reuse the oil pump from the old engine, the engine which broke down, or should I get a new one, and if so, regular or high volume one ?
If I get a new one, I'll need hmmm

What else ? The pickup is a press-fit one ?

As cheap as a new oil pump is, I'd never use an old one in a new engine. Definitely get the high volume one too. Yes, the pickup is a press fit, so that one you posted with the link should be correct. You just need to make sure to get the proper length pickup for the depth of your stock pan. There's just two different lengths for most stock SBC oil pans IIRC. I think it's Jeg's that offers the high volume pump w/pickup as a kit for a cheaper price than the one you posted from Summit, so you might want to go to their website and take a look. Go ahead and pick up a new oil pump driveshaft while you're at it. They're cheap, and the aftermarket ones have a steel sleeve instead of the cheap nylon one the factory uses.

yeah I did recall Jegs has a setup, after I posted here hmmmm so which shaft though ? hardened ? pickup for a 7 1/2 deep oil pan ?
Just go with the ARP oil pump shaft, it'll work great. As far as pickup depth goes, take a ruler and measure straight down from the top rail of your pan to the bottom where the pickup sits, and you'll be able to tell which one to use.

Well that's the problem though, my oil pan is still on the original engine, in the car, and I'd like to do the entire swap in one day.
