I think I need a new Servo
I think I need a new Servo
I recently installed a shift kit from B&M. I love how it shifts except between 2-3 which I have found to be a normal problem and can be fixed by putting in a better servo. I was driving home the other day and my trans craped out on me. It would not get out of first gear. I tried shifting manually even and nothin. So the car sat for several hours and I tried again to drive it home so not to have to pay for a tow. It would only shift up to 3rd gear. I have done some reading and it would appear that it very well may be the servo. I wanted to know how difficult they are to put in. I know my way around a car pretty well but when it comes to a trans I know little. Any advice on what type of servo or any tips on putting in a new one or any other input would be greatly appreciated.

actually, it is probably not the servo. sounds like the 2/4 band is toast. time for a rebuild.also, i would recommend a transgo shift kit. much better in my opinion than the B&M.

Most common cause of only having 1st and reverse is a stripped governor gear. Pull the governor out and check the gear on the end. At GM it is a $9 part.

With it later shifting up to 3rd and no further, it sounds like the gear is nearly stripped or on the way out. May have been able to grab just enough to get it to spin. It will then shift again.

I just got done lookin at my gm manual and I cant figure out how the governor makes such a difference? I guess I will just have to pull it out. Any suggestions or tell me exactly what it does?

The governor works in conjunction with the tv valve(trans line pressure) to control the shift points of the trans. - If the gear is stripped, it will not upshift. It is not a common problem in 700's like it was in t350's and 400's. - Sounds to me more like the band and/or clutches are toast. The servo does control the band, but if it has let the band slp enough to no longer operate at normal tmeperature, then the band is toast.
- the B&M shift kit is slow death to any transmission.

Ever rebuild an auto trans? If not, then you need to look more into finding a good shop or buying a complete unit from Pro Built or PATC. There are specialty tools involved, and A LOT of mechanical knowledge and skill. Auto trans are a 12 on a 1-10 scale, and 700's are the worst.
Not saying it can't be done, just make sure you're not looking to try as a novice. - If you think/know you're up to it, get the ATSG manual for it (4l60/700r4, there are two different books depending on the model year) and look into parts from either of the above mention companies. Personally, they're the only two I trust.

SO funny stroy...I was inder my car and noticed that 2 of the bolts that hold the trans. to the motor were gone and 1 of them was almost out. Maybe thats where I need to start?
