forward clutch pak problem
i started assembling my input drum today(the one with the shaft attached to it). i got all the pistons in with no problems. the two overrun clutches are in as well as the sprag. i put in the thick steel plate, wave steel plate, then a normal steel plate, the clutch and so on. i installed the snap ring and checked the clearance and it was way tight( about .002-.003). did i do something wrong. i aslo assembled the 3-4 clutch pack and the cleance and ive got about .039-.040 which is within danas(probuilt automatics) spec. dana wants me to have about .015-.040 for the forward clutch. was i supposed to leave out the thick steel plate that goes in first. any help would be great. thanks alot.
i forgot to mention that i have 5 new clutches for the forward clutch installed and 5 clutch disks came out of it.
and its a 91 700r4 from a firebird

Re: forward clutch pak problem
i think i found my problem. i must have gotten some wrong parts or im missing something. ill have to give dana a call on monday and check with him. i took apart the whole input drum this morning. the clutches and steel plates are installed correctly. i found the problem with the pistons. i installed the first piston (3rd&4th clutch apply) with no problems. then i installed the 3rd & 4th clutch apply ring, then the spring assembly, then the froward clutch housing. i reused all the old pistons so far. they were in great shape, so i just put the new seals on them. the problem is with the new forward clutch piston and the overrun clutch piston. the forward clutch piston that dana gave me in the kit is steel and the factory one is aluminum. the factory one is stepped towards the bottom and the new one is not. i dont now if thats the problem but it was different and the make ne alittle nervous. the biggest problem i noticed was with the overrun clutch piston. the outside daimeter is the same on both the old and the new, but the inside diameter were the seal rides on the shaft is way bigger. so if i were to use the new one it would never seal. the diameter on the hole in the middle of the new one is about 1 3/4 of an inch. the old one is just a hair over an 1 1/2 inches. also the seal on the new one is a plain O-ring and the on the old one has a lip seal. i dont know if i could use the old overrun clutch piston in the new forward clutch piston or not. ill post the end results when i talk to dana and we solve the problem.

Re: forward clutch pak problem
i just got off the phone with dana. it turns out that it was my mistake. i did not see that there is a collor that is supposed to be pressed in the shaft first. i looked around in my garage and there it was sittin right on top of my toolbox. im glad we got that straightened out.
