9 bolt axle shafts? help!

hey guys, ive got an 89 trans am gta that I bent the right hand axle on. Went and got an axle from the wreckers, went to install it and it was the wrong one. Its a 9 bolt with disc brakes , Apparently they changed the design half way through the year or something? does anybody have any info on this or know what years of axle will work in my rear end?

Re: 9 bolt axle shafts? help!

I am not familiar with "different" 9 bolts. They were all the same, shy of the brakes, and 2/3 series carriers. The axles are different length though from passenger to driver side. IIR they are about 2inches different.

Not totally sure of the difference, but I think they changed from a c-clip type axle to more of a floating type, again not totally sure on the technicalities.

9 bolts never had C clips. The same axles were used regardless of brakes.

okay mabey not c-clip, but some change in axle design half way through '89. The axle bearings were mounted differently.. or something along those lines. and yes there was a difference between drum and disc axles.

There were no changes in 9 bolt axles. 10033571 for the left and 10033572 for the right were the only axles used for the entire run of 9 bolts from from 85 to 90, regardless of disc or drum brakes.

Not to argue, but then why doesnt any 85-90 9 bolt axle out of a camaro / trans - am fit in my car? Already had to take a 89 gta 9 - bolt axle back because it was a different style. To my knowledge the disc and drum axles are different, can anybody back me up? I'll try and find a pic i guess..

Re: 9 bolt axle shafts? help!

i didnt even know 9 bolts came with drums as i thought the 9 bolt was a high performance option only with J65 disks

but i also heard there is no difference. i have a 89 rear end parting out as well. my axles are in great shape but i'll check them next time to see if they are different right to left. i didnt take notice to anything last time

How sure are you that those are 9 bolt axles you're looking at?

Re: 9 bolt axle shafts? help!

not totally sure haha, it could be a screw up by the junkyard guy i guess. You seem to be knowledgeable about axles so could you tell me which t/a's and camaros came with a 9 bolt for what years? And if 9 bolt did come with drum brakes? any info would be great thanks

Re: 9 bolt axle shafts? help!

Look for T/As and IROCs from 86 to 89. The Parts & Illustration Catalog specifies J65 rear discs for the 9 bolt housing, and has no listing for J50 rear drums, so it's possible that the 9 bolt wasn't offered with drums.

The 9 bolt is uncommon enough that most junkyards probably won't even know that there even was a different rear available, unless they deal specifically in F-bodies.

Re: 9 bolt axle shafts? help!

the 9 bolt did come with drum brakes on very few cars. I actually saw a 9 bolt with 2.77 and drum brakes in an 89 iroc.

Re: 9 bolt axle shafts? help!

i have 2 cars with 9 bolts and as far as iknow the only difference are the axle seals not by year but there is a right and a left just did them a month ago. the axles (in disc rears) all interchange 2.77 or 3.27.

I've also seen a 9 bolt drum rear once. I had to do a double take, but sure as s.h.i.t there it was.
