compatibilty issues

so my 700r4 died on me. I loved that thing, anywho I'm going to replace and as I always say, "if your going to replace, upgrade."

I found a 5spd in a 4th gen Camaro. I want to put it in my car but EVENTUALLY I want a 6spd.

If I do all the retro fitting for the 5-spd then when I get the 6-spd it will just bolt right up using the same clutch pedel and slave cylinder assembly, correct? will I need a new clutch disc and flywheel for the 6spd?

Next issue: I have an older Camaro engine, [Like mid 70's or so (no computer or emission stuff)] will the 5spd, and 6spd for that matter bolt up to it? Will I need a new bellhousing, and if so will the same "new" bellhousing work with the 5- and 6spd?

Quick reply please this tranny is in the junk yard and you know how quick they go.

Re: compatibilty issues

I didn't know they made 5 speed in 4th gen camaros.

anyways.

you can use the same clutch pedal and slave cylinder master cylinder etc.

clutch disc depends on whether or not its the same spline count.

Re: compatibilty issues

It's my understanding as well that the T56 (6 speed) requires a special flywheel to go along with the special clutch required.

The T5 5 speed from a fourth gen is usually a 6 cylinder car. That being said, I believe that they all use the 1 1/8 26 spline input shaft like the V8 cars from the third gens used. The V6 third gens used a 1 inch input shaft and is not really suitable for use in the V8 cars. GM would have used them to save money if they could have avoided warranty issues. They couldn't - even with a 305 engine...

All that aside; the 5 speed is not really an upgrade to the 700r4. Most people would agree that the headaches of computer tuning along with all of the hardware changes to the chassis make it a less than desirable swap. They say that about my BOP engines, too, and it doesn't stop me. You just need to know that this will be about romance and not an "upgrade."

If you want to put a 6 speed in eventually then start amassing parts now and fix your automatic for the time being. Grab the clutch stuff if it is the same for your swap and leave the 5 speed behind. If you can get the 5 speed for a song then sell it here! I bought my last one from thirdgen.org and am very happy to support the guys here.

Heck, you may even make a few bucks and have more cash for your 6 speed, eventually!!

Re: compatibilty issues

i just did the T5 swap from a 700r4 and i couldn't be happier. there might've been something wrong with the 700r4, but it was just total trash.

there is no computer tuning needed in the swap, just purchase a T5 prom and plug it into your ECM and you're good to go. i didn't make any chassis hardware changes so i dunno what you're talking about there.
