700R4 gone bad?
hey guys, I need help on this one....
I have an 85 IROC that has a 700R4 in it.
When I go to put it in any gear, it dies on me.
If I rev the engine and put it in gear it will drive, but as soon as i let off the accelerator, it dies.
Any ideas???

Re: 700R4 gone bad?
Pull out the wires that plug into the tranny. That should fix it if it's an electrical problem. Well, not fix it but let you know if there is an electrical problem and still allow you to drive the car. It will still drive around okay with no lockup as long as something internal didn't die inside the tranny.
Next, you'll have to pull the pan if unplugging it doesn't work. You will see the TCC solenoid up front near the pump. You may have to pull that out and clean it. Then put it back in and try again. You could just replace it with a new one...

You're not done...
You also have to post what the results were so that everyone can benefit from your headaches!

Re: 700R4 gone bad?
Sorry I haven't gotten back...a hot a$$ project came in at work (over time pay...yay
)
I did manage to unplug the connector on the transmission and it still acts like the torque converter is engaged.
next step is to pull the pan off and look at the solenoid and see if it is stuck.
I will get to this as soon as I get a breather from this project.
Thanks....

Re: 700R4 gone bad?
nope, no telling. I bought it from a bud last year and there isn't no telling when the last time was.
So you think that looks normal? I have no clue about how the pan or fluid should look like.
I noticed there wasn't any chunks or large pieces off in it, you think I need to look at the solenoid and do a new filter and fluid?

Re: 700R4 gone bad?
I would pull out the TCC solenoid and replace that. Fill with fluid and then run it.
Let us know after that...

Re: 700R4 gone bad?
Most likely just the torque converter has failed. The clutch inside is locked all the time.
At this point, it is time to evaluate your transmission as well. If you are high mileage and worried then now is the time to change it.
I seem to have much more time than money, so I would just pull the tranny, change the torque converter, and then put it back in.

1. Replace the torque converter and hope thats it.
2. replace or rebuild tranny as soon as overtime at work is back in the
budget @ work
3. replace the tired 305 with something bigger same time as the tranny
repair/rebuild.
4. sell the 3rd gen and get a 4th gen. (would be easy to do if the 3rd gens
weren't so bad a$$ looking.
decisons...decisions...
probably replace the torque converter and go from there.
I can't even believe I actually thought about selling my IROC, everytime I sell one of my Camaros, I end up regretting it.
thanks for the help so far KrisW
