T-56 noise, and reverse gear sticking
T-56 noise, and reverse gear sticking
ok all here to ask a few questions: I just finished the t56 swap into my 1986 iroc now that im driving it it seems like a berring or like straight cut gears at an idle in nutural, and also shifting hard from first to second makes a berring noise when i let off to shift. and again from second to third but not as loud. Also the trans has gotten stuck in reverse three times. if the car sits i put it in reverse to keep it from rolling when I get into the car start it back up it goes in reverse when I stop and go to put it into nutural it goes to nutural but seems to never come out of reverse becasue as soon as i let the clutch out (slowly) its stalls. but it does not do this everytime. I got this trans from a member and was very satisfied untill now im a little dissapointed if this is how a trans with 77k on it is suposed to be. Becasue to rebuild these is NOT cheap... please any insite is greatly appreciated

Re: T-56 noise, and reverse gear sticking
Tell me about...bought my T56 last year for $1400 a complete setup with clutch setup. Reverse is broke and now my 3rd gear syncro is on its way out(that may be my doing)
My reverse has a tendency to pop out and grind if i dont keep constant pressure on it. Been that way ever sense i put it in. Its only bad when i use it 2 or 3 times in a row...3rd gear has just started acting up for me.
Just curious what member did you buy that from i was looking at a couple for sale recently but decided its not worth the risk and ill pay the $1450 for a stage 4 rebuild.
Bearing noise may be the throwout bearing, i had trouble with mine. Is yours new? Mine would make noise at certain rpms, itd just rattle.
Are you sure the shifter is correct in the slide and didnt get pushed to the side? Also check the slave is properly seated against the fork as well as the fork is correctly pressed onto the throwout bearing. Got 4 qts in it?

Stage 4 rebuild? for $1450? Just curious as to where and what this includes.
I just rebuilt mine with my brother in law and spent $1100 in parts alone.

Check the rebuild packages. Once i send mine back for a $500 refund itll be $1450.
Ive heard they are the best...its where all the ls1 guys go for rebuilds.

That seems like a good deal... I guess mine is almost a stage 4 rebuild lol.
I ended up doing all that except the billet keys and mainshaft. Also kept 1st 5th and 6th gear since they were still ok. My 2nd gear synchro was completely wasted, no friction material left.
And 77K on a trans is a lot of time for it to get wrecked. Mine only had like 30K on it.. but who ever was shifting it really beat on it. Also if it came from a junkyard it could have gotten water in it. Mine was like that.
These transmissions are known to be somewhat noisey when not in gear.
