I installed a new tranny in my car. I put a 1 quart of tranny fluid in the converter and 5 in the tranny to start. Broke in the new motor and add another 3 quarts. And the added another 3 for the larger tranny pan. In park the car will try to move forward a bit. After I got the car road legal I need to bring it to a tranny shop a block down the road so the could set the tv cable. The car felt like it was slipping and didnt want to shift going to the tranny shop. So i idled to the shop just feathering the gas. The shop didnt want to work on my car so I had to drive it a block home and parked it. Then had it towed to another tranny shop they took it for a test drive to set the tv cable and right away drove it back and said the tranny is shot. Did the guy who built the tranny sell me a POS ???

 

Sounds like you burnt it up on motor break in.You should have had at least 3 quarts in converter and 5 in the trans befor you fired the motor.

With a deep pan and stock size converter that thing is gonna hold a CASE of fluid.

Yep.......Sounds like the front pump was starved during break in and is now toast.

 

10.5 qts is typical for a fresh fill. This assumes a stock pan and a stock size converter. Filled to capacity and setting the tv cable need to be done before leaving the driveway. As others said, sorry for your loss.

It was filled before I ever drove the car. 12qts to be exact. Put one qt in the converter and 5 in the pan. Broke the motor in in my garage and add 6 more during the break in. Oh well still sucks.

 

If the converter was not full(or VERY close to full) as soon as you fired the motor the pump sucked it dry then ate itself-----only takes about 20seconds with no fluid to kill that pump. I know from a $800 uh-oh a few years back.

 

Sounds like you should have been ok . Maybe the trans guy will help you out on the repair.

 

Thats the funny thing about it. This tranny guy has been around for awhile now and I called the shop he works at and they said he retired and moved to florida. And the real kicker is since he did the preformance tranny builds on the side the shop said any warranty I had with the tranny left with the builder. Nice kick in the *****! So I had no choice but to pickup the car today and AAA wouldnt tow it from the shop to my house. So I drove it home, at least it still has 2nd and reverse or I would really be screwed.

 

Many things could have happened not enough fluid , Driving with the TV cable unhooked or badly out of ajustment can burn one up in only a couple miles. Or the builder may have goofed in anycase sorry for your fustrating experience, BUT FOR ALL OTHERS

1-12 US QUARTS BEFORE YOU DRIVE IS MIN WITH A 12 INCH CONVERTER AND STOCK SHALLOW PAN ADD 2 MORE FOR DEEP PAN.
2-WITH A 9.5 TO 10 INCH CONVERTER 9.5 QUARTS BEFORE YOU DRIVE AGAIN ADD TWO IF DEEP PAN.
3- YOU CANNOT DRIVE A 700R4/2004R EVEN A COUPLE MILES BEFORE YOU GET THE TV CABLE RIGHT YOU WILL BURN IT UP QUICKLY!

THESE NUMBERS ON FLUID ALSO COUNT IF YOUR DOING AND ENGINE BREAK IN THE TRANS STILL NEEDS THE FLUID!
