we hate the cross pin bolt?
I cant figure it out, why the hell does this bolt get so beat up? Taking my diff out today mine broke right at the actual pin, i just had the threaded part, and the rest wasnt coming out... demolished a perfectly good differential after that ;0
but why the hell? I had read that this would happen more then once
the first time I took a rear end apart, was one I found buried in my woods when I was a kid, it was still good inside and the bolt came out easy and the pin fell right out of the diff... and the carrier even came out with my hands, didnt involve a prybar... was the 80s really this bad, or is this more advanced technology at work here, and this is how it should be? ;0
aside from that rant, i dont suppose anyone knows if I can get the cross-pin bolt for a torsen diff from GM? they neglected to give me that peice when I got it awhile ago
now I need to hit the junkyard for some 28 spline axles, since i didnt end up with one of those rare '89's that already had them..

Those things break so frequently that my dealership in a town of 1800 has them in stock.

You DO realize that the junkyard WON'T sell you "axles"; what they WILL do is sell you A WHOLE REAR END (assuming they have one, which isn't really likely in the first place, because EVERYBODY including the employees of the yard is looking for that part), and let you take what you want out of it and leave the rest behind, and they'll take care of disposing of the now-useless remains for you for free?

A pair of far better axles will cost you about the same as that rear, and you won't have to get dirty and waste gas, and you can have them on your doorstep in the morning.

Re: we hate the cross pin bolt?
nobody has mentioned that you cant just change the axles to a different spline, the side gears also must be changed to match the splines. So you either have to buy a new axle and new side gears, or find a salvage diff with all the parts, but thats not much fun these days.

Re: we hate the cross pin bolt?
they will let them take them, supposing they have them, the junkyards around here are full of camaros and firebirds, though usually ~'86ish, and ill probably throw in that extra $50 and have them dig them out for me.. the one I usually goto also has a giant parts warehouse for all those "now-useless remains" that gets left behind, and anything else gets throw into the crusher and trucked off to the recycler...
the only trouble Im likely to encounter if I can manage to find a '90 up car is that theres a 50% chance it was hit in the rear
have to hit the junkyard regardless for a few other parts I need (some random connectors and such)
you honestly want me to spend $230 on new axles for a 10-bolt behind a L03?
edit: I guess since they come with bearings, seals and new studs that $230 isnt bad, but im still going to see how much the yard wants first

I don't "want" you to spend ANYTHING. Won't hurt my feelings (much...) if your car never works again.
However, what I'm telling you is, IF you manage to find a 90-92 F-body rear (the only kind that has axles that will work in our cars) then you'll find yourself buying and paying for THE WHOLE REAR to get them; it will probably cost you MORE THAN $200; you'll end up with crappy stock axles; when for THE SAME MONEY, or maybe even LESS, you could have GOOD axles.
The crusher/melter is where whatever parts of a rear end you leave behind, will end up. Nobody is going to go to a junkyard looking for a set of 3.08 or some such gears, or an open carrier, or a housing, or any of that. The HUGE MAJORITY of people (including shops) who go to the junkyard looking for a rear, want A REAR, because they or their customer tore theirs up; and a handful of disassembled parts of a rear left over after somebody else took it apart and removed critical components, isn't going to do that other customer ONE DAMN BIT of good. Therefore, it won't do the junkyard any good either, because if their customer won't buy it, the junkyard can't sell it. Therefore they will throw away whatever you don't take, and will receive no money from it. Therefore they WILL charge you the FULL VALUE of the thing whose value you effectively erase for them by scabbing the axles out of it and leaving the cross pin, C-clips, cover, bolts, cross shaft, small gears, and thrust washers scattered all over the ground.
There's a time and a place for getting junkyard stuff, for sure. But it helps to understand the economics of the business they're in, to predict whether it's even worthwhile to deal with them or not.
26-spline garbage is alot easier to come up with; but the odds of finding good ones are even worse since they're older. More of them will tend to be spalled and brinnelled where the bearings ride on them. And you're still stuck with the same economics; they're going to charge you for A WHOLE REAR, maybe a little cheaper rear since it's not THE SINGLE MOST SOUGHT-AFTER REAR on the planet; but a whole rear just the same. Maybe a couple of rears if that's what it takes to come up with a pair of good axles.

Re: we hate the cross pin bolt?
But see thats where YOU live. Where i live i can take apart a whole motor for a connecting rod bolt if i wanted to and slip that in my pocket or pay $1? they might charge me. The yards i go to they dont care if you only want the oil pan off a northstar v8 or just 1 cylinder head off of it. They have set prices for whatever piece you take. Checking my price list: $15 straight axle or $20 for a C.V type axle. Rear End Car or Truck: $60. That does not include brakes.
So it all depends what yard you go to...

Re: we hate the cross pin bolt?
perhaps you dont have enough stock of 3rd gens in your area or something.. I cant recall ever seeing a 3rdgen in the yard missing a rear; wheels are often missing, and 4th gens sure, those are usually stripped by the time i find them
Ill go out on a limb and say nothing on these cars is desireable around here apparently, I find all kinds of stuff people say they cant find.. lots of rare options and just general stuff people want, black interiors, t-tops galore, etc.. anybody needs a ttop they probably have at least 4 sets sitting in the yard... noone buys this crap
seen a few accident free convertibles bite the dust in there
and yeah your right if I walk up to the counter with just the axles they are probably going to want about same price as entire unit, thats why I bring a buddy and we grab some other stuff as well, i find buying in bulk helps ;0
but I dont bother pulling pain in the *** parts before I ask them how much they will want anyways

Re: we hate the cross pin bolt?
ok old faithful here seems to have run out of late 3rd gens for the time being, plenty of mid year camaros though.. usually can find a v6 90-92 bird at least, will check the smaller places first but...
so do those axles just drop in? I had read a couple articles or forum posts somewhere about people having to cut them down slightly to proper length, or machine the end to fit inside the torsen c-clip retainer
oh and the other question was I was hoping not too far into the future to be able todo the LS1 brake upgrade and afaik the rears wouldve bolted right up to my stock stuff, so Im also wondering if the hub is the same size as my original

Re: we hate the cross pin bolt?
Are you asking about the Superior axles?
Yes the are a direct drop-in. Everything about them is the same size as stock. They're just .... better. In every way except for the dimensions that create the stock fit (C-clip groove, bearings, splines, hubs, length, etc.). In fact I have a set of them on the 92 (I think that's what year it is anyway....) rear with PBRs, that's in my 83 car.
