4th gen rear end swap ?
did any of the 4th gen rear ends come with a 3.73 rear end or are they all 2.73 3.23 and 3.42? and are they all posi. i'm looking at one that says it's from a 98 firebird that is a NON LOCKER and has a 3.73. i thought they didn't have a 3.73 stock. and what do they mean by a non locker- does this mean it doesn't have posi traction.

Stock gears in all of the 4th gens are these: 2.73, 3.23, 3.42
Early V6 cars had 3.42 non-posi, late V6 had 3.23 non-posi (posi may have been an option)

what i don't understand is that in a 3rd gen when you have a limited slip differential it usually spun 1 wheel. and in the 4th gen camaro and firebirds the limited slip usually spins 2 wheels at least my brother does. whats the difference

Re: 4th gen rear end swap ?
i think my car has an open differential and everyone just calls it limited slip because it slips!!
when i lift my car up and turn one wheel one way the other will go in the opposite direction.
my brothers 93 trans am both wheels go in the same direction.
this brings up the question again does all 93 -02 firebirds and camaros have limited slip also known as posi tracion?

Re: 4th gen rear end swap ?
Posi = Limited Slip and both wheels spin the same direction when the rear is in the air.
Non-Posi aka Open Differential, one wheel spins the opposite of the other.
Limited slip is an option on the 4th gens.
Now for more confusion, the 98-02's had Torsen Differentials which are a torque based unit. both the Posi and Open diff Torsen units act like open diffs when the rear is lifted off the ground.

Re: 4th gen rear end swap ?
wow that does make things harder when your looking for a used rear end. now when you say its an option , your saying that not all v8 camaro and firebirds had the limited slip.

Re: 4th gen rear end swap ?
so what is the easiest way to tell from 98-02 if your getting a posi traction. did some of the v8s from 98-02 have an open diff or did they all have posi?
Re: 4th gen rear end swap ?
If you are pulling it from a 98-02 V6, make sure the donor vehicle has RPO code 'G80' (G80 - Axle Positraction, Limited Slip)
