5 Speed from a late 80's, early 90s truck

Is it a T5? I was considering buying an 86 iroc from a friend, and another friend has an old truck with a 350/5 speed combo in it that I could get for cheap, but I was just wondering if it was the same 5 speed offered in camaros? and if not, what is the transmission model ? how beefy is it?

I obviously know that it will mate to a 350 (will be a 383) and all, but I was wondering in reference to bolting it in, u joints, driveshaft, speedo gear, etc.

I don't think it will work. Also, the gearing in it would be real shitty. You're best off buying a tremec transmission

Re: 5 Speed from a late 80's, early 90s truck

Your right about the gearing, didnt think of that. Chances are the gearing would be short though, which is good for accelearation . Im not looking to shell out cash, Im just a kid in college, but it would have been a cheap swap. I have no problems with auto, id just drop in a th350, manual is alot more fun though

I know I could make it work, a chevy is a chevy is a chevy, But does anyone have the model name of the 5 speed transmission in C or K series trucks? Gearing ratios?

if his truck does have a T-5, its not going to have the right bellhousing or tailshaft.

Explain a little more? Id be using both the 350 and transmission. 350 would be bit into a 383, I lax a bit on knowledge of transmissions, but the bellhousing should only affect it bolting up to the engine, correct? The tailshaft I can understand

T-5 in a camaro/firebird is cocked to the left some 17 degrees or something like that, so with that and the stubby tailshaft your shifter will be nowhere near where its supposed to go

Re: 5 Speed from a late 80's, early 90s truck

Tranny bellhousing won't fit in the tunnel of the 3rd gen.
Also it's not rotated 18*, so the shifter won't line up with the hole in the car.
Also the tailshaft doesn't have a mount for the TA, so you'd need a different tailshaft, or an aftermarket tailshaft.
And no, the tranny would have WIDE spaced gears, and first would be a creeper gear (useless).

I think a certain member on here would say "Think of driving your favorite dump truck. That's what you'll get"

This just isn't a good idea. It'd be VERY difficult to get it in (if even possible with the shifter). Or you'd need to get the 18* rotated and smaller BH from a camaro, and put in this tranny. Still, bad

Woah, well that right their was the kind of information I was looking for lol. Gracias. I'll either leave it auto or find a real t-5 for a camaro. Problem is, they cant handle much power

I don't know. It just hasn't died yet. I've probably got 15 runs in on it. 5 runs on a 305 with drag radials and 10 on the 400. I'm surprised it doesn't explode when I launch.

Re: 5 Speed from a late 80's, early 90s truck

the T5's biggest downfall is slam shifting. if you do a standard 2 second shift they will hold just fine.

At the launch is when it'd be most likely to break.

Re: 5 Speed from a late 80's, early 90s truck

Here's my 2 cents- The truck tranny is a New Venture Gear 3500 or something close, I don't remember the exact name. My '91 s10 had one mated to a 4.3 v6 and it was very peppy. The gear spacing wasn't bad at all except first gear ran out pretty quick. The gearing in the full-size trucks may be different. The tranny also did not have a removable bellhousing, it was made into the case. The tranny also looked to be very large, fat chance of it fitting in an fbody. That's all I know
