gear / transmission question???

I'm looking at getting a 82 trans am. the guy said he bought the car years ago from a lady who said her son's auto mechanic shop put a 4:10 gear in it. is this good??? he said is seems to drive in a low gear on the hwy but drives great. he then said his friend put a 350 transmission and shift kit in it a year ago. is that a good transmission? I have a 700r4 in mine. thanks

Re: gear / transmission question???

4.1o gears and a th350 will make for some high rpms on the highway. that is more of a surface street/weekend driver/drag race set-up. i would hate to have 4.10's without overdrive to compensate on the highway

Re: gear / transmission question???

would this set up be o.k. as just a lot of city driving. I really want the car for a show car and for power. I 'd like to know that if I want more power out of the car the trans. can handle it. I haven't seen or driven the car yet. I've just talked to the guy. he said he drives it a lot and took the car from alabama to TN and it was fine just hte speedometer isn't working.

Re: gear / transmission question???

o.k. I have another question. the car I'm getting the car and the guy told me it has a number 2 shift kit on the 350 transmission. what is this shift kit and what does it do? I don't know anything about the transmission parts. also, can the 4.10 gears be changed out or does the entire rear end have to be changed? the car has the 305 with a 350 crank rebuilt 20,000 miles ago.

Re: gear / transmission question???

Sounds like B&M's stage "2" kit. Basically hard tire chirping shifts... Not really great for performance breaking traction like that... Just my opinion.... No probably many peoples opinion that B&M shift kits are a sorry band aid that adds un-needed stress to the drivetrain...

I had 4.10's with a 700R4 and I could `barely` tolerate them. I used to shift into 3rd and say "This would be what a T350 sees"

I couldn't take 4.10's at a 1:1 trans ratio (T350)

Maybe 3.08 or 3.27 would be better... 3.42's would be my `edge` with a cruising v8 with a T350.

The rear would be easy to change although I would just swap the rear out with a 'you pull it' replacement if the 4.10's get on your nerves (They are fun for about 2 weeks or the first $50 in gas... whichever comes first)

Re: gear / transmission question???

Agreed that the 4.10s arent very good on the highway. Also makes for short time in each gear. You can just change the gears. No need to swap the eintire rear. In that year it should have a 7.5 differental unless it was changed out. A pic of the rear cover would help us help you ID it. Since they put a 4.10 in it, chances are it has a 3-series carrier and your options for changing to a different gear are easier. 3.42s or 3.73s even would be more pleasurable all around. As far as the 'shift kit' , how does it shift? Is it hard on light throttle? X2 on it sounds initially like a B&M-style kit. I dont care for those much. But Ill wait for your reply B4 getting on that bandwagon. Hope this helps some.
