2.73 to 3.73?

2.73 to 3.73?
Hey, Ive got a 86 Camaro with the 2.8 in it. ive done basic power adders K&N filters, Royal purple synthetic oils. Flowmaster exhaust , test pipe(not quite sure if it adds power). what i was wondering is I right now have 2.73 gears in it (last owner had no clue what he was buying) i have now a 3 series carrier with 3.73 gears to go with it.. what is my torque increase going to be like after i install new gears. With my current gears.. my car just dogs like no other . i am hoping to accomplish a double edge with my gears.. maybe adding a little pep and take some "pressure" off of my clutch as it seems to shutter when trying to take off in those tight traffic situations.
Just lookin for some feedback and maybe a little info.

Yea, it'll make it get up and go a lot easier.
If your clutch is chattering you may be due to get your flywheel resurfaced. The gears won't effect that.

Dang. Even GM put steep gears in the V6 cars from the factory. My 305 was a pig with 2.73s originally and I drove my sisters 2.8 with 3.42s also. It too was a pig and needed some gearing help.

Re: 2.73 to 3.73?
hi,
where did you get your gears from? i read that aftermarket gears like motive can cause strange noises.. not too sure about that though - or maybe you already found out what's wrong? and what do/did you do to break them in?
so btw, can anyone tell me where to get the speed sensor gears?

thanks for the break-in description!
i have some more questions: i want to go 3.42 and eaton posi on my formula. i don't exactely know what people consider to be the "carrier". where can i get a 3-series carrier, or do i just need a 3 series posi and everything's fine?

Re: 2.73 to 3.73?
2.73 to 3.73 was a night and day difference for me.
the only thing that made it suck was getting traction at the track on street tires, I could dump the clutch at 2500 with the 2.73's and chirp and go.
If you got a 2 series carier lying around, you can always buy a ring gear spacer and stick your 3 series gears in it.

Re: 2.73 to 3.73?
is there a difference in durability or performance between my 3.42+3series posi setup with a 3 series carrier or a 2 series carrier with a spacer ring?
thanks
oh and i'm still wondering where you get those speed sensor gears

Re: 2.73 to 3.73?
well those gears are hard to find and a dealer only part. Also to put the new gears in they or a good tranny shop has to take the tail shaft off and get in there to change it. A big pain in the butt and the major reason i'm not doing it. Then again they make aftermarket controllers that allow you to change how many pulses equal a certain mph. I'm thinking if it's compatible to our older cars (not being OBDI) then that might be the best way. not for certain though. I think i just added more questions. lol!

Re: 2.73 to 3.73?
I found something! a guy on this form is using a "vss ratio adapter made by Abbott" this allows you to change the pulses that go out and is supposably computable. score! no i might actually do another rear end change
then again it kinda sucks!
