Re: can you name this differential

I did a search on ebay for auburn and saw these which closely resemble my carrier. So I am assuming it's a match ..... Now the question is this a good posi unit?

Re: can you name this differential

It's a stock unit, mfd by Auburn.

It's .... stock.

Not "better than stock", not "worse than stock"; it's .... stock.

IMO it's not very good. Those are prone to wear out, and rarely last more than about 120,000-150,000 miles with any amount of clutch grip left.

Auburn LONG SINCE quit supplying parts to rebuild them, so when it reaches end-of-life, it's dumpster time.

You can get a good idea of its condition if you jsck up the rear of the car, put the trans in Park (or high gear if it's a stick shift), put a a torque wrench on a lug nut, and see how much torque it takes to turn one wheel (will make the other go the opposite way of course). It should take about 100 ft-lbs to do that, for a good new stock one of those. If it takes less than about 50 ft-lbs, it's basically not doing anything at all in real life.

At least it's not an Eaton Gov-Lock, though; those are WORSE than useless.

A "high-perf" Auburn looks just about like that inside, except that there will be additional set of springs. Plus, the newer ones have larger clutches, giving more area and therefore more grip; the place opposite the ring gear where that carrier in the pic is sort of "necked down", is the same size all the way to the end, to give more space for larger clutches inside there. Here's what those look like. Note that the one on the left is a stock 2 series, and the one on the right is a "high-perf" 3 series. You can spot the series by how "cone-shaped" vs "flat" the back side of the ring gear flange is.

All in all, I wouldn't expect too much out of that thing, beyond "My car has posi" bragging rights.

Re: can you name this differential

I had mine in the air with a bar through one rim and broke the lugnuts loose with a pry bar and the other wheel never moved .... my carrier doesn't look like the ones you posted though. maybe those are 28 spline carriers

Re: can you name this differential

Your carrier looks EXACTLY like the ones I posted, except that yours has the old-style "necked-down" part for the older little weenie clutches, being the older weenie stock unit, as described above.

"Broke the lug nuts loose" isn't much of a test.

Yes the one on the right in my pic happens to have 28-spline side gears. Can't say about the one on the left. Doesn't really make alot of difference to the matter at hand.

You can also look at the ring gear flange; there's approximately 100% odds you'll see this cast into it. It's the Auburn Gear logo.
