700R4 Question

I was looking at an 87 Gta everything was good condition save one thing. The transmission was leaking from the pan and when i drove it it seemed to hesitate from 1st to 2nd. Any ideas the rest of the car was good but if its going to be a problem or expensive to fix i don't want to get stuck with it so any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

Re: 700R4 Question

Check your fluid level. Operating temp and in Drive. Have assistant...dipstick is easy to read. Pull it, clean it off, dip it and read it.

Re: 700R4 Question

Well the plan is definately leaking so Im sure its low on fluid but he does have and aftermarket radiator that keeps the car very cool. So is it that chance are the only problem with the transmission is the pan leaking and replacing that will fix the problem between first and second(i dont know if it happens in 2-3 i did get it up that high on the side roads).

Sounds like a corvette servo is in your future. When a shift takes longer than it should the frictions inside the trans wear and get hot, reducing the life of the trans.

Re: 700R4 Question

well i do not race the car at all and really i dont beat it hard, the only time i ever beat it is when i have a girl frend of my in the car and i want to make her scream and well i can make it shift by lifting my foot too... but that sound like a good idea does the tranny have to come out or just the valve body

Re: 700R4 Question

Not a major operation at all. A few hours and you will be driving. The servo is inside the round cap on the pass side of the trans just behind where the dipstick and TV cable go into the trans. There is a snap ring and sealed cap that needs to pop out then the servo assy is in there. Pay attention the order the parts come out, most instructions that come with the part do a decent job of explaining. You will need to unbolt the trans crossmember from the body and lower the tail of the trans to give you room. A pain in the a** but it will come out. Little or no fluid loss, the pan doesn't have to come off.
Not too difficult depending on your experience level.
