rear end howl
ive searched and came up with nothing really, all old old threads, could someone help me out?
i installed a 3.73 torsen posi in my car this spring, i put it in and put maybe 1000 miles on it. ive noticed it has a howl on deacceleration. only when i let off the gas it will howl unless i get back on the gas. it almost sounds as if its coming from the passenger side also.
people have told me it could be a wheel bearing, or a ring and pinion, how do i check?
thanks guys

Re: rear end howl
I have had that exact condition twice with third gens.
Both times the front pinion had come loose and was literally falling inside the axle housing. The face of the pinion was rubbing on the center differential carrier! You could see the teeth marks when you look inside!!
Take your rear cover off immediately! Also look to see if you are leaking oil from your front pinion seal. You are.
I replaced my seal, torqued down the pinion nut to spec, and it happenned again. The last time I actually put a spot weld on the nut to keep it from backing off. That seemed to work fine. Apparently, the pinion and nut on these things wear out and don't hold their torque. I used a new self locking nut the second time and it still came loose.
It's another reason that I hate these 7.5 10 bolts. Both of my cars that did this were 5 speeds. Yours being automatic seems odd, but since you took it apart it may not be able to keep torque anymore.
At any rate, you need to look now before you bust your rear end all to hell.

Re: rear end howl
check again...
seriously...
drain the oil and put some paste on the ring gear and look at the tooth pattern. Look at the teeth on the pinion gear and see how sharp they are. They may have only been lightly grinding so far. Howling means that something is grinding and putting metal in your gear oil...

Re: rear end howl
mine did exactly what he said i replaced my pinion seal and didnt get it tight enough and it came loose on me.
Re: rear end howl
The pinion nut is not tightened to a specified torque. It is tighted until it preloads the bearing against the crush sleeve, which you always replace when taken apart. Then you measure the rolling resistence of the pinion with an inch lb wrench to get it correct usually 6-8 in lbs. on a used bearing and 12-15 in lbs. on a new bearing. If this isn't done correctly it would cause of howl in the rear end.

Re: rear end howl
LOOK..........
You need to look inside and inspect every part for damage. The howling lets you know that damage is taking place. Next, look for front seal leakage. You need to pull off your driveshaft yoke, remove your pinion lock nut, and replace your front seal. Then you need to torque your nut according to one of the methods above. I personally prefer the impact wrench version. Once you have a new seal and your nut is torqued down the sound you hear will go away.
The real question is: did you already hurt something? Look inside and see what looks bad.
Change your oil.

Re: rear end howl
My 9 bolt is doing the same thing after a fresh rebuild last week. I was told by the installer to drive it easy for 15 miles in low speed traffic, then let it cool down for a day, then repeat. After that, drive on the freeway and after 150 miles, the break in period will be done. I also had a TA specialties aluminum girdle with stud kit installed. What should I do? Is it a loose pinion nut? There were spacers used instead of the crush sleeve.
Re: rear end howl
If new bearings were installed, it's best to recheck the pinion bearing preload as the bearings seat in, just to be sure it hasn't changed. It's a lot of extra work, but in my experience not many people take the time to set up rear ends properly. That why I prefer to do it myself, then I know it's right. If it's a new ring and pinion and it's making noises I would discontinue use and find out the problem immediatley before you destory the ring and pinion for good because once they set in there's no way to fix it other than replacement again.
