Shifter Is very tough to move

Shifter Is very tough to move
Hey guys. Since i bought my car (year ago) the shifter has been very tough to move down into diff. gears. It's an auto.. It's gotten better since I used it more, But still requires some strength to move between gears. Its the worst from Park down. Also, my reverse lights dont come on unless i push the shifter all the way up in the reverse gate. (it wobbles a little in reverse and it has to be up as far as it wobbles) Im pretty sure it shouldnt be like this?
Thanks guys

Re: Shifter Is very tough to move
Do you think its a shifter problem, or a transmission problem?
If your not sure, pop under the car, remove the cable from the linkage at the trans. Stick a screwdriver through where the cable just came out of, and go through the gears, if they go through all with the same amount of effort and relatively smoothly, its a shifter problem.
Solution: replace shifter. If its just rusty, oil it up a bit, should get it moving. But if it wobbles, i think its time for a new one.
If not, then i think hard shifting through the gears is the least of your worries.

Thanks man. I remember looking under the shifter plate months ago and it wasnt really rust, but it looked kind of aged if you know what I mean. My car's at the shop but i'll check it out when it's back. Thanks again!

Re: Shifter Is very tough to move
Ya I have had that "money pit" of mine for 10 years...so she isnt going anywhere..lol.
Re your shifter...with me I had the same problem. It turned out to be the little plastic "sliders" under the shift plate..one snapped in half and was catching on the housing when moving back into park. (these are the flexble pcs which move the gear indicators". 2 seconds and pair of tin snips to cut it and its been fine since.
Good luck with your new search!
