T5- DOES IT MATTER IF I USE DEXRONIII OR GEAR OIL

i have know idea what t5 i have. it came out of an 86 z28. it looks like it has tranny fluid in it, but i keep reading that to 86 had gear oil, and auto trans fluid was only recommended for the 88 -up t5 's

My Chilton's manual says 1985-92 uses Dexron automatic trans fluid. It says 82-84 5 speed uses gear oil.

there are really easy ways to check whether or not you have a WC tranny or not. If you do you definitely need to use ATF because of the clutch-type material on the synchros

Crawl under the car and look. There should be a sticker right on the side of the tranny that says "Dexron II"

you arent going to find DII anywhere anymore, but just use some DEX/Merc from walmart for cheep. It's basically just Dexron III (the liscense expired I think to actually call it Dex III now) but its backwards compatible.

Get some of the fluid on your clothes, walk in the house. If your wife/mom says "ooh, you stink" it's gear lube. Otherwise it's ATF. But I'd bet it's ATF.
