Shifter cable
Hey Guys,
Im hooking up all my carb and trans linkage. Carb and trans kickdown on the carb are all set now I gotta hoke this up. Which I think is the shifter cable(correct me if im wrong). But I notices the plastic around the cable is worn out and theres about an inch or so of exposed cable. Is this ok or do I need to get a new cable? Also Does it just snap onto the lever on the trans or is there a retaining clip that goes on too? Got a few pics to show what im talking about, thanks.

Worn cable?

Re: Shifter cable
Could be worn. On mine, the inner cable isnt exposed. It looks like the inner cable stretched out. Why would GM want to have such an important cable exposed like that?

Re: Shifter cable
You need a new one. With that much cable exposed, the shifter won't actuate the shift linkage until all that slop is taken up, and you don't have the travel at the shifter to compensate for it.

It takes about 5 minutes and if you can work by feel, you don't even need to jack the car up.

Re: Shifter cable
Ok well I got the car on stands right now so that makes it easier. But when I was lookign a tit tthe cable goes through the bottom of the car so dont I need to disconnect that end from the shifter first?

Re: Shifter cable
doesn't matter which you disconnect it from first...disconnect it from the linkage on the tranny, disconnect it (if not already done) from the shifter, slide it out to underneath the car, connect the new one up to the linkage on the tranny, put the other end into the same hole of the car, push the water plug in, go inside the car, connect the shifter linkage to the shifter, and put the cotter pin in and your done.
