Bought Wrong T56
I have been looking for a trans forever. I finally found one for the right price and then realized that it was an LS1 T56. From what I read I need a LT1 T56 What are my options with this trans. Can I use it or should I sell it and go for an LT style? If I can get it bolted up what can I do about the hydraulics? This will be going on a new 350.

I think you just made a typo, im guessing, you need an LT1 style? You could probably sell it and buy a new one, or maybe even trade. The LS1 will technically work, but it is longer than the LT1 style. Depending on what engine you have, it might work.
Need more info, and less typos.

Re: Bought Wrong T56
If you bought a T56 out of a 98-02 car(LS1) The input shaft is too long to use with an LT1 bellhousing. The bolt pattern for the bellhousing on the LS motors is different. Mcleod makes a modular bellhousing you can use and sells the clutch, hydrolics...everything you need. It's not necessarily cheap I'm going to be 2k into my setup by the time I'm done but I'm going to use their twin disc clutch that is rebuildable and holds 1000 horse. I can't remember if Mcleod is the manufacturer but there is an aftermarket spacer that makes it possible to mount an LS1 T56 up to a T5 bellhousing

TPI TERR just did a LS1 t56 in his genI block you can try pm'ing him to see how much it cost him for conversion stuff. Here is a link to his thread about it.

You can use the LS1 trans with an adapter plate, T5 Bellhousing and an extended pilot bearing. (uses standard t5 clutch and hydraulics) If you need part # , let me know.

Can I use the LT1 bellhousing with the LS1 or do I have to use the aftermarket? Also Could I just use a 4th gen Driveshaft? I posted for a trade but If I can make this work then I will. I also assume the input shaft can be changed and that would eliminate the need for the spacer?

Re: Bought Wrong T56
You can't use the LT1 bellhousing with anything except with a T56 with the LT input shaft. There are 4 different input shafts. Retrofit-LT1-LS1- Viper.
Retrofit= Classic 4 spd, T5 z-bar or T5 hydraulic bellhousing ( adapter plate)
LT1= LT1 bellhousing only
LS1= Classic 4 spd, T5 z-bar or T5 hydraulic bellhousing (adapter plate required) (extended pilot bushing required)
Viper= Can be machined to varying lengths (expensive)
3rd or fourth gen driveshaft and yoke will fit.
Trans mount must be modified or you can purchase a premade one.

Re: Bought Wrong T56
Gotta take hydraulics into account. There's no mount for the fork on an LS1 tranny, it uses an internal slave cylinder. Might not be enough room for a slave cylinder and a clutch with that bell housing. May need the adapter plate for more reasons than simply the input shaft...
I may be willing to swap my LT1 T56 for your LS1 T56, *IF* I can find an LS1 for not ridiculous money. If I can, then I'll get up with you.

Re: Bought Wrong T56
For future searchers, this is wrong unless he's referring ot the LT1 bellhousing ONLY fitting the LT1 T56. The LT1 bellhousing fits the Gen SBC withoutany problems. THe flywheel may be a different story, though, depending on whether you 've got a 1 or 2pc RMS. The bolt pattern for a 2 piece rear main seal crankshaft is different so you'll have to get a flywheel that fits the t56 and the old bolt pattern. They're available, and expensive.
