It's the vent. Earier T-5s just had a little white plastic plug mounted in the top of the trans.

you're the man sk, I was hoping that was the case. this place is thebest.
Have you ever changed a t5 on the floor, no lift, only stands
If so, did you remove the clutch housing seperate or all with the tranny. I pulled mine together and now worried about getting back in and lining up everything. freakin body is soo low

Many, many, many, many times. I had it down to where I could do a complete T-5 R&R in about 2½-3 hours, from drive-in to drive-out. It's fastest with 3 pairs of jack stands and a floor jack.
The T-5 is about the lightest manual transmission there is in a V8 car. As such things go, it's pretty easy, really.
Easiest to pull the trans first, then the BH; and reassmeble the same way. The T-5 weighs so little, you can stab it up in there and then hold it with one hand while starting bolts with the other. Whatever you do, DO NOT let the trans hang its weight on the clutch without support; and DO NOT use the bolts to "draw" the trans up to the BH, make sure it goes all the way in BEFORE tightening the bolts.

those Popeye (the Sailor Man) forearms of yours

I wish!!!
d00d, I'm 6'1" tall, and weigh 135 lbs. I would be the PERFECT 140-lb weakling, except that one of those is BIGGER than me, I'm even scrawnier and weaker than that!!!

If I can do it, ANYBODY can.

Re: need help quick guys
Alright guys, tranny is in and underneath all done...all I have to do now is dump new fluid in. BTW--I'm guessing I pour it in the shifter location, right?
I see the check plug midways up on the tranny and the drain on the bottom. Checked the drain and she was bone dry. A lot came out during my fumbling on disassembly. My Haynes book says 3.5pints, sound right? Using TCI Auto tranny fluid? So far the clutch feels good, but I have not started her.
Also, my one blunder that I know of was that I forgot to put the fork boot back on. tried to split it and get it on but no luck and I'm not pullin it all apart again for it.

Yup, you can do it that way; or, through the fill plug, on the PASS SIDE of the trans.
DO NOT take out the bolt looking thing on the driver's side that looks like a plug!!!!
3.5 pints = 1¾ quarts
Sounds like not quite "full", but probably enough... seems like if you add until it reaches the fill plug, it ends up taking more than 2 quarts. But I haven't messed with a T-5 for a while, so my memory could be off.
That kind of fluid, or any other ATF, is fine.
